The Venture Science Doctorate (VSD) program, 3rd cohort, starting September 2025.Join the world’s first 3-year venture creation focused PhD program run by Deep Science Venture College at Woolf University: a globally recognised, decentralised institution widening access to higher education. Once the new venture is incorporated with pre-seed investment from DSV, you and your co-founders will own the majority stake in the business and continue receiving support from the DSV team post-spinout.The role is full-time, initially remote, but transitioning to a hybrid role post spinout - anticipating offices and lab space based in the South-East of the UK.The Opportunity: Enabling the Capture of CO₂ from the AirCarbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) by DAC is an exciting technology space with many established and emerging process technologies - technologies that need to achieve production scale rapidly to play their part in achieving global net-zero emission goals by mid-century.Whilst many DAC processes are characterised by unique core technology elements, the companies driving their development are also tackling engineering challenges that are common across processes - and struggling with the compromises of leveraging mature solutions from adjacent sectors. We believe that there is an opportunity to leapfrog suppliers in these adjacent sectors, and rapidly grow a technology &amp; manufacturing business - by building strong partnerships with process developers, taking a requirements led approach, and bringing innovative technology to bear on unmet needs.This is especially true in the sub-process of air-contacting - in which air is moved through a reactor, and meets either a solid or liquid sorbent material. This is an open application for expressions of interest to join DSV as an Advisor or Co-Founder in Residence for an early stage renewable energy venture currently being developed at DSV. Co-Founder in Residence role will be full-time, with start date in Q1 2025. We're open to the possibility of a candidate joining as an Advisor initially (asap), then transitioning into the Co-Founder in Residence role.We are seeking applications from experienced industry, startup and/or new engineering based technology development professionals from anywhere in the world to work with us on this venture.You’ll work closely with the DSV team and the current Founder in Residence for this area to spin-out a new company by end of Q2 2025. The OpportunityOur mission is to tackle the 37% of global greenhouse gas emissions caused by electricity production, while preparing for a future where electricity demand is expected to triple by 2050 under a net-zero scenario. Current renewable energy technologies like wind and solar are vital to the transition but face critical barriers in ensuring reliable, 24/7 power due to their intermittency. The challenge of achieving constant clean power at scale remains unsolved.To address this, we are focused on next-generation large-scale, long-duration energy storage and constant generation technologies like enhanced geothermal systems (EGS). However, several key challenges remain:<ul> <li>Storage Duration: While lithium-ion batteries can help with short-term storage, long-duration energy storage (e.g., days to weeks) that is cost-effective and scalable remains elusive.</li> <li>Cost Parity: Achieving price competitiveness between intermittent renewable energy (with storage) and traditional fossil-fired baseload power sources is a major hurdle for high-power industrial consumers. </li> </ul>In addition to contributing to decarbonisation, these technologies have the potential to reshape dependence on centralized grid infrastructure and enable more resilient industrial energy systems. To do this, we are working on a venture for novel primary ironmaking to produce high purity primary iron.This opportunity is funded by the Iron Ores team of leading global mining company <a href="https://www.angloamerican.com/">Anglo American</a>, as part of the company's efforts to unlock and accelerate climate positive innovation through investment and industry collaborations. This opportunity is in particular aligned with Anglo American’s ambition to cut its Scope 3 emissions – which derive primarily from the use of its iron ore production in steelmaking – by 50% by 2040.Our ApproachAt DSV, we work backwards from the desired outcomes: a steel plant that is capable of producing net-zero primary iron or steel.By generating an <a href="https://www.deepscienceventures.com/content/the-outcomes-graph-2">outcomes graph</a>, we’ve identified key constraints in iron making (e.g. incompatibility of poor quality iron ores with emerging ironmaking technologies, plant infrastructure degradation, and high economic exposure to fluctuating hydrogen costs). Through ideation and consultation with external experts, we are approaching two main technologies that are practically scaleable pre 2050, solid-state reduction and low to mid-temperature electrolytic techniques that could be used to solve some of these challenges. The precise techstack requires refinement and external validation, while the techno economics are validated, the founding team is seeking individuals with commercial expertise in steel to advise or co-found.What will the role look like for an advisor or co-founderAs a technical Advisor you will provide commercial and technical expertise to support customer validation and techno economic assessment for advancing novel steelmaking approaches, incl.
