The Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center (AWCC) is a sanctuary dedicated to preserving Alaska’s wildlife through conservation, research, education and quality animal care. AWCC takes in injured and orphaned animals year-round and provides spacious enclosures and quality animal care. Animals that cannot be released into the wild are given a permanent home at the center. We have been able to provide care for hundreds of displaced animals because visitors like you have made critical contributions in the form of admission fees, donations, memberships, and gift shop. <div><div>ALASKA WILDLIFE CONSERVATION CENTER Title:                           Hoofstock KeeperCategory:                   Fulltime, Year-roundReports To:               Curator, Assistant Curator  FLSA Status:              Non-Exempt                                                                                                                                                                            General Function <ul><li> Under direct supervision of the Animal Curator and Assistant Curator, the Hoofstock Keeper performs tasks requiring specialized skills in connection with the care and maintenance of the animal collection and exhibit facilities at the center</li></ul>                                                                                                                                                                        Major Activities (Typical Duties/Responsibilities) <ul><li> Works days and hours assigned by Animal Curator; changes based off season. </li></ul><ul><li>Assist with Animal Care MOD  (Manager On Duty) coverage when needed<ul><li>In the event the Animal Curator or Assistant Curator are off site, be prepared to lead the animal care team for the day with husbandry duties and tasks. </li><li>In emergent situations, be the liaison between AWCC’s Main-MOD and Animal Care Departments and sometimes act as back-up in non-animal care related emergencies (human medical distress, human traumatic injuries, minor vehicle accidents, etc.). </li></ul></li><li>Husbandry feeding tasks that fluctuate seasonally based on feeding requirements per species:<ul><li>Oversee’ s browse feeding of all ungulate species requiring browse as primary food source during summer months when leaves are available. </li><li>During winter months, work with Maintenance Department to deliver and feed hay to assigned ungulate species, daily, as well as water. Assist Animal Curator/Assistant Curator with training other keepers of proper haying procedures. </li><li>Will monitor and establish cleaning schedules for ungulate animals.</li><li>Makes daily animal observations and reports any abnormal behavior or health concerns to the supervisor immediately. All observations and duties are recorded daily on the online program Animal Care Software.</li></ul></li><li>Diet preparation and distribution following prescribed diet and feeding procedures. Records diet consumption daily and notifies supervisor of feeding behavior changes.</li></ul><ul><li> Recommends improvements in animal care procedures and schedules, exhibit upkeep and employee and visitor safety.</li><li> Carries out prescribed veterinary treatments as assigned by the veterinary staff and Animal Care management. Assists in capture and crating/uncrating of animals. </li><li> Performs routine maintenance and upkeep of walkways, zoo grounds and facilities as assigned. Reports needed major repairs to supervisor and maintenance departments, regularly checks and maintains equipment used</li><li> Acts as liaison with the public by courteously answering questions and enforcing feeding rules for the animals. Presents educational programs and tours when assigned</li><li> Research and preparation of information regarding resident wildlife for discussion with the public and other professionals.</li><li> Reports all departmental personnel concerns directly and immediately to the Animal Curator</li><li> Prepared to handle filming requests from AWCC management as occurrences arise. Adjusting schedules to meet the needs of the AWCC. Remaining flexible as Curator to cover the needs of the animal care department.</li><li> Manager on Duty Shifts: the AWCC operates with a general MOD and an animal care MOD. The Curator will assist with general MOD coverage when needed, occasionally having to double cover a general shift as well as an Animal Care MOD shift. The Curator will ensure all animal care MODs are trained to handle emergency situations.</li><li> Establish and implement animal collection and exhibit plans that meet the established goals and objectives of the AWCC</li><li> Develop and implement animal health and husbandry programs consistent with professional standards of care</li><li> Work with the Head Veterinarian and ensure animal health and welfare is top priority, carrying out medical prescriptions and procedures as needed. Animal Curator

<div><div>Our Fellowship Program is a unique opportunity for individuals seeking a temporary, full-time volunteer experience at the AWCC. With a minimum commitment requirement of two months, working a minimum of 32 hours per week, participants are given the short term and rigorous opportunity to live on site, join our team, learn about AWCC operations, and gain valuable career skills. These dedicated volunteers are interested in learning about our organization, mission, and wildlife and desire to share their knowledge with others. Fellowship candidates may secure funding through their university, a grant, scholarship, or similar and work as sponsored volunteers. While preference is given to applicants being sponsored for a fellowship, we will accept volunteer applications without sponsorship. Applicants should indicate their sponsorship status in the Fellowship application form and will be considered on a case-by-case basis. While applicants can indicate departmental preference in their application, participants will have duties in both our Education and Animal Care departments, with tasks such as presenting daily talks and tours, assisting with school programs, preparing animal diets, and cleaning habitats. Tasks in this program are given on a scale of earned responsibility, starting with a training and orientation that includes learning about the animals in our care and shadowing staff. *Fellowship opportunities are currently full through December 2024* Our volunteer needs vary through the year due to fluctuating visitor numbers and seasonal changes. There are no specific start and end dates for this program, but availability is limited based on the terms of consecutive volunteer programs. Naturalist Fellowship

<div><div>Join the AWCC as a Docent! For those individuals looking to volunteer with the AWCC on a weekly or bi-weekly basis, our Docent Program is for you! Rooted in education, our Docent Program seeks dedicated volunteers interested in learning about our organization, mission, and resident wildlife. Docents support the AWCC by helping visitors develop an understanding and appreciation of the wildlife we care for, their wild counterparts, and the awe-inspiring environment surrounding the sanctuary. To meet this goal, docents engage with guests by offering educational opportunities and answering questions as guests view wildlife. All experience necessary to become a successful docent at AWCC is provided through our Docent Training Program and corresponding Education Department staff members.
