Expectations are that individuals at this level will be learning the technical aspects of the VELCO power system as well as the processes, tools and physical attributes of the system and completing engineering assignments under direct supervision.Qualifications include a BS in Engineering or Engineering Technology. Mid-Career (Experienced) Engineer level-  The individual will understand the Vermont power system and area of specialty as well as VELCO standards and procedures and be able to competently complete engineering assignments. General oversight is expected on technical aspects of assignments from the department manager or more experienced engineers.This level is for the practicing engineer with typically 3-6 years of experience.Senior Engineer level- This level recognizes the talent and skills of a practicing engineer capable of making competent engineering recommendations and decisions, managing technical projects with minimum level of oversight, and mentoring less experienced engineers.  Expertise in a particular area of engineering is evident in this classification. It is typical for an individual to be in this job classification for the majority of their career.This level is for accomplished engineers, with typically more than 7 years of experience. A Bachelor of Engineering or Engineering Technology is required. A Master’s Degree in Engineering or a specialized industry credential such as a Certificate in Power Systems Management, together with a history of sustained exceptional performance, is a plus.Knowledge/Skills <ul><li>Fundamental understanding of civil engineering principles as they relate to transmission systems and practices, including materials, methods, and tools involved in the construction or repair of transmission lines, and to a lesser degree, substations, along with conventional buildings, access roads, water, sewage systems and other related structures.</li><li>Knowledgeable in computer-assisted design (CAD), PLSCAD and other design, data recording, and analyzation software, or possesses the understanding of how these are used in the designs of transmission infrastructure projects.</li><li>Complimentary understanding of related electrical deign principals such as grounding, short circuit impacts, insulations levels and other related principles.</li><li>Ability to understand and apply NESC, NEC and OSHA safety regulations related to assigned projects. </li><li>Ability to identify and solve complex problems.</li><li>Excellent verbal and written communication skills. </li><li>Ability to be both creative and analytical.</li><li>Extremely detail-oriented and accurate.</li></ul>Important Considerations• VELCO is headquartered in Rutland, Vermont. Transmission Line Engineer

System Protection Field Technician

We are a source of electric grid information for Vermonters, energy planners and policy makers.<ul><li>Collaborate with Visionaries: Vermont continues to be a leader when it comes to policies put in place to address greenhouse gas concerns. Vermont ranks in the top ten on a per capita basis or as a percentage of electric demand for renewable energy and energy efficiency.  We are invited to participate in discussions and studies to figure out how to meet renewable energy requirements.</li></ul><ul><li>Lead in a Dynamic Environment: Planning necessitates negotiations even for fundamental aspects like distribution system data sharing with the Vermont distribution utilities, and study assumptions with ISO-NE. Vermont planners need to understand differences in planning processes, such as Vermont vs. New England, transmission vs. subtransmission.</li></ul><ul><li>Fuel Innovation: We have a long history of finding innovative ways to address reliability concerns, and improve the planning team’s efficiency. We participate in several research activities with the National Labs and University of Vermont to test new technologies and processes. overall transmission system in Vermont.  </li><li>Select the best planning solution, and meet current and projected system needs while adhering to state, regional and federal requirements.  </li><li>Lead the Planning team in the performance of technical analyses of the transmission system, including related studies, such as evaluating transmission economics in support of the overall Transmission Planning Manager

The Senior Network Engineer provides enterprise technical engineering and support, as well as management of network and project based activities. With minimum oversight, you’ll work in collaboration with the Telecommunications team and stakeholders, and are responsible for the design, implementation, and administration of the enterprise server environment adhering to compliance and security requirements.  This role is hybrid and will require 2 days/week on our Rutland, Vermont campus. How you will make an impactIn this role, you will coordinate the technical activities of a telecommunication systems administration support team and maintain infrastructure that is essential and relied upon on a 7x24 basis.  The Senior Network Engineer will:• Perform complex network design and planning and integration support functions, such as troubleshooting, analysis, research, debugging and problem solving.• Apply in-depth and diversified knowledge of carrier class telecommunication engineering practices and standards in system designs and operation. • Maintain a thorough understanding of telecommunication transport technologies. • Operate and maintain high capacity optical transport systems, microwave systems, and land mobile radio networks (if applicable). • Design, manage, and operate complex private packet switched communication networks (CES, IP routing, DNS, Security, VPN, etc.). • Manage and operate TDM digital cross connect systems in a multivendor environment. • Manage a Network Operating Center monitoring TDM, Carrier Ethernet, and proprietary networks using SNMP monitoring tools. • Monitor and conduct trend analysis for telecommunication networks to proactively identify performance issues ensuring highest availability of critical networks. • Provide engineering and technical support to field personnel at radio sites, distribution utilities and substations throughout the State of Vermont; travel required. • Conduct field assessments as necessary to plan and manage substation and mountain top radio site projects. • Complete assigned projects within required timeframe. • Create a multisite RF propagation plan and analysis. • Maintain a thorough understanding of FCC licensing and requirements. • Collaborate with and support all members of the Telecommunications Group. • Provide a high level of customer service to internal and external customers • Direct work of junior staff members, provides mentoring and guidance. Who you are A Bachelor’s degree in information technology or networking is highly desirable; an equivalent combination of education and experience, such as an Associate’s Degree in Telecommunications or IT with 7+ years of experience may be considered. CCNA or CCNP certifications are a plus.
