The Public Interest Network

Our mission is to tackle some of the big questions facing our country. How do we make sure the next generation has clean air, clean water and a livable climate? How do we change our energy and transportation systems to meet the needs of today, not the last century? How do we grow our food in ways that leave both people and our environment healthier?

Our country needs smart solutions to these problems, and our researchers and advocates have come up with dozens of them. But having good ideas isn’t enough. We have to find ways to cut through all the noise in today’s politics and win over decision-makers, opinion leaders and the public.

Our network operates more than 15 organizations committed to a shared vision of a better world, a set of core values, and a strategic approach to change. We’re transpartisan. We value dialogue over polarization. We invest in people and strategies that deliver results, including advocacy, lobbying, campaigning, litigation, policy research and grassroots organizing.

COMMUNITY ACTION WORKS HIRING FOR DEPUTY DIRECTOR or ORGANIZING DIRECTOR “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” – Margaret Mead At Community Action Works (formerly Toxics Action Center), we believe that environmental threats are big, but the power of well-organized community groups is bigger. That’s why we work side by side with everyday people to confront those who are polluting and harming the health of our communities. We partner with the people who are most impacted by environmental problems, especially Black, Indigenous, communities of color and poor communities, training them with the know-how anyone would need to make change in their own backyard. Because when neighbors know how to make change, they can build the power to transform our world. Joining the team at Community Action Works, you’ll get to dive into building power with communities facing the most profound...

U.S. PIRG Zero Waste Campaign Associate The Zero Waste team with U.S. PIRG is seeking a Campaign Associate to help lead our Beyond Plastics campaign. Nothing we use for a few minutes should threaten our health and pollute our future for hundreds of years. Every day, people throw away tons of plastic “stuff” — cups, plates, bags, containers, forks, knives, straws, spoons and more. All of this waste not only clogs our landfills, trashes our parks, and litters our streets, but it also washes into our rivers and oceans, where it can harm wildlife. It’s time to move beyond single-use plastic, by getting rid of the most harmful waste, and stopping the use of things we truly don’t need. U.S. PIRG is calling on our decision makers to lead us toward a zero waste future by passing a statewide ban on polystyrene (commonly known as styrofoam) take-out containers and single-use plastic bags. Entry-level candidates are encouraged to apply; we provide training on advocacy and...

Get the Lead Out Campaign Associate The Clean Air and Water team is looking for an associate to drive our “Get the Lead Out” campaign.  The crisis that unfolded in Flint, Michigan in 2014-15 provided a tragic reminder of the dangers of lead exposure. The drinking water of an entire city had been contaminated with lead. More than 8,000 children under the age of 6 drank lead-contaminated water. A potent neurotoxin, lead affects how our children learn, grow and behave. Now we know this toxic threat extends well beyond Flint. The only way to ensure safe drinking water for our children is to “get the lead out” of our schools and preschools. This involves proactively removing lead-bearing parts from schools’ drinking water systems — from service lines to faucets and fixtures — and installing filters certified to remove lead at every tap used for drinking or cooking. These steps cost money, but our children's health is worth it. To convince state and local leaders to act,...

Environment Washington Campaign Associate Last summer, the world watched as a grieving orca mother carried her dead calf for 17 days. They were members of one of the Southern Resident orca pods that make their home in the Puget Sound — and scientists warn that this iconic Pacific Northwest species will not survive unless we take bold action. These orcas are critically endangered and the primary cause, according to scientists, is the disappearance of Chinook salmon — the orcas’ main food source. Southern Resident orcas eat almost nothing but Chinook salmon — it makes up 80 percent of their diet. But these salmon are rapidly vanishing because their path from spawning rivers into the Puget Sound is blocked by multiple dams. Chinook salmon are now listed as endangered, To save the orcas, we need to save their food source. If we don’t act fast to boost Chinook salmon populations, we could lose our orcas forever. Governor Inslee established the Orca Recovery Task Force,...

Environment New Jersey Campaign Associate Environment New Jersey is seeking a campaign associate to help coordinate campaigns to protect New Jersey's high quality waterways that provide drinking water, recreational value and key habitats for threatened species from the impacts of overdevelopment and run-off pollution.  The most powerful tool to protect our water quality is to stop pollution before it happens. This concept — antidegradation — is enshrined in the Clean Water Act, and nearly 50 years after its passage, we still need to protect our waters so they are fishable and swimmable. That is why Environment New Jersey is running a campaign to advocate for stronger protections for the lower section of the Delaware River to allow for primary contact, including swimming, targeting a regional agency. New Jersey's waters are hidden gems — and we need to keep them that way. We are seeking a Campaign Associate who will spearhead this campaign and work with our experienced...

Environment Georgia Campaign Associate Join Environment Georgia as our Clean Energy Associate and help build a 100% clean energy future with state director Jennette Gayer.  We all know that burning oil, gas, and coal has polluted our air, water, and land for decades – and now it’s changing the climate even faster than scientists feared it would. We know we can have healthier communities right now and a livable future for ourselves and generations to come. But to get there, we must transform the way we produce and consume energy. Environment Georgia is working with key Georgia cities and at the state legislature to move forward policies that set bold goals and move concrete policies forward. We are seeking a Campaign Associate who will spearhead this campaign in cities like Atlanta, Macon, Savannah and Athens and work with our experienced team of advocates, researchers, and digital and communications experts to run a strategic campaign to win support for 100% clean...

Join the Environment Texas Conservation team, led by state director Luke Metzger, with our current campaign to expand protected parkland in Texas. From camping under the stars at Big Bend Ranch to exploring the cypress swamps of Caddo Lake, our parks make life better here in Texas. Our parks protect the clean water we depend on and provide a home for some of Texas’ most wondrous wildlife, like the black bear and the leatherback sea turtle. But unfortunately our parks and open spaces face chronic underfunding which threatens their very existence. Every hour, almost 20 acres of open space are destroyed in Texas to make way for new strip malls and subdivisions. That is why Environment Texas has launched the Million Acre Parks Project — a campaign that seeks to better protect the beauty, character, and heritage of the Lone Star State by adding one million additional acres of parkland for us all to enjoy. We are seeking a Campaign Associate who will spearhead this campaign...

Environment Oregon - Wildlife Over Waste Campaign - Development Associate We are hiring for a Development Associate to help build the resources to advance our environmental protections across the state of Oregon. Every day, Americans throw away tons of foam cups, containers, and other single-use plastics that ultimately end up in our rivers and oceans. Marine life, like sea turtles, are the ones who suffer, ingesting the plastic and ultimately starving to death. We need to stop the use of single-use plastics for the sake of our wildlife. California's iconic sandy beaches and dramatic coastline are some of the most beautiful parts of our state, and important habitat for wildlife, from sandpipers to sea turtles and the California sea otters. Unfortunately, our ocean and coastline are facing threats. For too long, oil drilling has spilled toxic oil into our ocean, overfishing has depleted our ocean of life and our waste producing society has created a plastic pollution nightmare. On top of this, climate change is wreaking havoc on ocean ecosystems.
