SUMMARY OF ROLE

 

SunPower is seeking a high-energy, hands-on Applications Engineer of Commercial Energy Storage, a key role in our Commercial Energy Services team. Core responsibilities include: providing technical training and support to internal and external stakeholders, applying lessons learned to future projects and product selection, identifying project level solutions, supporting product evaluation, and overall collaboration with cross-functional teams for successful completion of SunPower’s commercial energy storage projects. The ideal candidate will be technically strong and comfortable engaging with a variety of stakeholders across our customers, partners, suppliers, and internal organization. This position reports into the Energy Storage Business Development team and will work as part of a cross-functional team to deliver best in class solutions to our customers.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following (other duties may be assigned):

 

Identify and address challenges preventing opportunities from turning into orders
Develop and manage necessary support processes, documentation, and tools to enable successful and efficient technical sales
Assist sales analysts and development engineers with interconnection strategy and advice regarding energy storage.
Provide product training, including key technical features as well as proper use of processes and tools, to both internal and external groups
Drive, track, and analyze pilot programs with new products
Assist in product selection for various projects based on technical and economic considerations
Act as first level escalation point for technical support inquiries
Field engineering support - troubleshoot, test and commission technical equipment
Act in client facing meetings, presentations and conferences
Understand local regulations and norms periodically to ensure that SunPower solutions are compliant and current with changing market requirements
Gather feedback and new requirements from customers and installers
Work closely with the software product management team and internal and external customers to define and prioritize feature development
Manage the technical deployment of storage systems including interconnections, constructability, design and commissioning.
Facilitate interactions various teams (product management, supply chain, purchasing, engineering, technical writers, etc.) to successfully perform product pilots and launches
Provide critical closed loop learning to project development teams, with experiences derived from field experiences as well as interactions with customers

RELATED EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

 

Minimum requirements - The least amount of skills and training candidates must have to do a specific job. Candidates not meeting these requirements will not be hired for this position.

B.S. degree in Engineering and 5-8 years of related experience or M.S. Degree and 3-5 years or Ph.D. 2+ years
OR equivalent combination of education and years of related experience

Preferred requirements

BS in technical field from a leading engineering program, preferably electrical engineering
Minimum 5 years relevant work experience
Solid technical foundation, ability to learn quickly, and demonstrated ability to frame and drive technical decisions
Demonstrated ability to work with, and coordinate, cross functional teams
Strong oral and written presentation skills with an ability to communicate effectively to a wide variety of clients and partners
Self-starter, able to thrive in a fast paced and continually changing environment
Willing to travel up to 30%
Experience supporting technical sales and working with customers

 

Excellent technical understanding of commercial energy storage technologies and grid-tied photovoltaic systems including: inverters, monitoring & communications, and energy management technologies
Hands-on experience designing and building PV and energy storage systems
Hands-on prototyping capability, and extensive troubleshooting and debugging of electronic systems
Knowledge of commercial building electrical wiring practices
Strong knowledge of relevant PV and energy storage codes and standards: NEC, NFPA, ASCE, NABCEP, OSHA, UL, CAL Fire, IEC
Understanding of ECO and DCO processes, document control process
Experience in Off-grid or Micro-grid system development or deployment a plus
Lean product development experiences a plus
Understanding of energy economics, utility rate structures, and distributed generation interconnection policies and compensation mechanisms
