Job Description

The European Climate Foundation (ECF) was founded in 2008 as a major philanthropic initiative to help tackle climate change by fostering the development of a low-carbon society at the national, European and global level.

We support over 280 partner organisations to carry out activities that contribute to the public debate on climate action, drive urgent and ambitious policy in support of the objectives of the Paris Agreement and help deliver a socially responsible transition to a net-zero emissions economy and sustainable society in Europe and around the world.

Position

About the role

The ECF’s Land Use programme is a new initiative to help Europe address greenhouse gases from the land-use sector, both in Europe and internationally. The programme will work with a wide range of partners in civil society, think tanks, business groups and the research community in support of positive action to change the debate about land use and climate change and to accelerate policy solutions in the areas of agriculture, food, forests and nature.

The Senior Associate will help the Programme Director manage two related workstreams of the programme: reforming Europe’s food and agriculture policy framework and protecting Europe’s forests and other carbon sinks. The role offers the opportunity to help shaping the direction of a new programme and is a truly exciting opportunity for the right person to grow, develop topical expertise and build their network.

Key responsibilities

Reporting to the Director of the ECF’s Land Use programme, the Senior Associate will be responsible for:

  • Co-developing the strategy for the forest and agriculture workstreams in the Land Use programme;
  • Developing the scope of work for different projects including budgeting; soliciting and validating proposals from potential partners; drafting recommendations for the consideration of the ECF board and donors;
  • Implementing strategies with grantees and partners; monitoring and evaluating progress and impact of initiatives and grants; and acting as a liaison to report regular progress to donors;
  • Supporting the director in scoping the landscape around local, national and European climate politics and advocacy, as well as identifying potential new projects and grantees;
  • Working closely with the ECF’s strategic communications team and with outside bodies like the Global Strategic Communications Council to ensure that the communications are fully integrated into programming.

Requirements

Experience and competencies

  • Demonstrated interest in the mission and values of the ECF;
  • At least 5-7 years of experience of working on advocacy, policy analysis or campaigning in an environmental area;
  • Strong knowledge of climate change policy or related issues; strong knowledge of and experience working on agriculture and/or forest policy or other related topics;
  • A strong understanding of the processes and dynamics of EU and/or national policy making;
  • Excellent command of spoken and written English; knowledge of other European languages an advantage;
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing strategies to achieve change;
  • Attention to detail; flexibility; ability to work independently and to prioritise tasks in a fast-moving work environment;
  • Structured, driven and able to manage many processes simultaneously;
  • The ability to work as part of a team, to foster fruitful relationships and to collaborate with stakeholders internally and externally;
  • The disposition to work with colleagues in a high-trust international community of peers with a spirit of generosity and mutual support.
