Position: Data Scientist/Sr. Scientist-Fermentation and Formulation. Berkeley, CA preferred. 

We are rapidly expanding our fermentation and formulation (F&F) teams to improve our ability to develop knowledge and expertise around creating stable formulations in various stages of pipeline from early research to commercialization.  The Data Scientist/bio-statistician will be a critical member of this growing team as we increase the number of strains evaluated in F&F and amount of data generated at various stages. This role will be responsible for rapid analysis of data, search for obvious and non-obvious  trends and connections between cellular biophysics, fermentation, formulation and stability data to create predictive models and shortening the process development cycle, guiding the teams in proper statistical design for various experiments, and be the liaison between F&F and scientific computing team. 

Responsibilities:

  • Write programs and select tools for analyzing data from various machines in Fermentation and formulation.
  • Combine cellular biophysic, fermentation, formulation, process profile, and cells stability data for comprehensive analysis, searching for trends to create predictive models.
  • Make recommendations for process development based on biostatistical analysis of small and large scale.
  • Build models that rank our strains in early pipeline by physiological/stability performance, strain optimization strategy and performance based on the field data. 
  • Automate data analysis to improve the design-build-test-learn cycle 
  • Collaborate with software and data engineering team, strain optimization team, agronomy and plant biology team to improve the design-build-test-learn cycle.

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Creative, and adventurous in seeking solutions to problems. 
  • PhD with strong biostatical coursework, in Bioprocess engineer, Food engineering, chemical engineer, biophysics, biostatistics or  a related field and 3+ years of relevant experience.
  • Experience extracting meaningful insights from physiology, fermentation and formulation data to guide processes for high throughput fermenters
  • Knowledge and expertise on Linux 
  • Expertise writing scripts for data analysis with R, Python, SQL, and basic user interfaces to query and report on data. 

Preferred:

  • Experience in BioAg or Biological fields with fermentation and/or formulation data analysis. 
  • Experience with cloud based computing analysis
