Job Description

We're Cruise, a self-driving service designed for the cities we love.

We’re building the world’s most advanced, self-driving vehicles to safely connect people to the places, things, and experiences they care about. We believe self-driving vehicles will help save lives, reshape cities, give back time in transit, and restore freedom of movement for many.

Cruisers have the opportunity to grow and develop while learning from leaders at the forefront of their fields. With a culture of internal mobility, there's an opportunity to thrive in a variety of disciplines. This is a place for dreamers and doers to succeed.

If you are looking to play a part in making a positive impact in the world by advancing the revolutionary work of self-driving cars, join us.

Possible teams you can join:

  • Autonomous Vehicle Modules
    • Electrical Engineer: Electrical schematic and PCB design, simulation, bring-up, and validation of safety critical printed circuit board assemblies that support the development and integration of Autonomous Vehicle Hardware from telematics to inertial navigation systems.
    • Signal Integrity Engineer: Perform signal integrity and EMI/EMC design, simulation, and validation for all Autonomous Driving hardware (AV Modules, Compute, Networking, and Sensors) and associated wiring harnessing.
    • Mechanical Engineer: Perform mechanical design, simulation, and validation of the enclosures that protect our safety critical electronics of our AV Modules from the environment and electromagnetic interference (EMI).
  • Autonomous Vehicle Sensors
    • Sensor Development - Developing cutting edge sensor hardware all the way from conception to mass production. The sensor development teams work closely with teams such as perception software and systems engineering to design, develop, and build lidar, radar, camera, and acoustic sensor hardware.
    • Sensor Integration - The best sensor hardware in the world still needs to be integrated into the harsh environment that is its host vehicle. The sensor integration team brings the whole AV system together by working cross functionally with Cruise teams and our automotive partners to develop the sensor packages and supporting hardware infrastructure that enables optimum AV performance.
    • Sensor Cleaning Systems - Our team is responsible for enabling the AV sensors to perceive the world around them by mitigating the impacts of environmental effects such as rain, dirt, dust, and other contaminants. Effective autonomous sensor cleaning is a demanding engineering challenge with the potential to enable or prevent the deployment of AVs at scale. The goal of this team is to validate existing technologies and develop new ones to enable real-world AV performance.
  • Fleet Reliability - Our team is the first responders for issues that occur in the field. We work with GM and suppliers to root cause hardware / firmware issues, develop and test solutions, and apply those solutions to the fleet.
  • Calibration Hardware - Our team is responsible for designing, validating, and deploying hardware to efficiently calibrate Cruise vehicles at scale. This includes a range of activities including hardware design, software development, and manufacturing engineering. We work closely with different teams within Cruise and GM including the localization and perception software, fleet operations, hardware component development, and manufacturing.
  • Silicon- Our team is responsible for building silicon components for the AV products at Cruise. The team is front end ASIC focused (architecture, design, verification) and we work closely with embedded/ML/sensor teams to define current and future AV needs to be hardened in silicon.
  • Autonomous Vehicle Network - Designing a network for the autonomous vehicle requires significant departures from a normal vehicle networking. At Cruise, we not only design how the sensors communicate with the computation units, but also design interaction with the host vehicle, backend infrastructure, riders and fleet operations. The Network Systems Engineering intern will help capture requirements for such networks, work on test plans, and evaluate drive data to fine tune performance of the network.  This role is primarily systems engineering but will have to interact with hardware engineering, customer interaction features and operations while reviewing for possible safety and security violations.
  • New Vehicle Introduction - Plan, design, and execute the processes to validate and bring up new vehicles, as well as upgrade current AVs, as part of pre-launch build activities at Cruise.  The goal is to refine initial working prototypes into functional and reproducible products, eliminating significant technical challenges in the manufacturing process prior to production AV builds.
  • Manufacturing - Our team is responsible for supporting and scaling builds from in-house prototypes to rate production at contract manufacturers. This team leverages specialized skill-sets to deliver DFM, excellence in builds and incorporating lessons learned into new product revisions, and owning supplier manufacturing development and support to achieve rate production. The Manufacturing team operates with excellence, efficiency, and scalability.
  • Hardware Test - Our mission is to develop effective test methods to verify and validate Cruise AV components (compute, modules, sensors) designs against performance and reliability requirements, identify issues in both development and production testing, analyze testing data and propose data-driven design countermeasures. Engineering activities cover both hardware (test bench) and software (testing scripts) development.
  • Hardware Reliability - Our team is responsible for the reliability of components unique to autonomous vehicles. From sensors, to compute and other processing modules, we accompany the design, define the validation process and analyze test results.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Help design and build equipment to bring up and calibrate autonomous vehicles
  • Create and execute tests of AV processes and equipment
  • Perform hands-on troubleshooting of electrical, mechanical, and integration issues on autonomous vehicles and their equipment

What you must have:

  • Currently pursuing a BA/BS or MS in Engineering: Electrical, Mechanical, Mechatronics, Automotive, Industrial, or similar
  • Hands-on experience with mechanical, electrical, and software engineering components and an understanding of how they interact.
  • Experience in CAD/CATIA
  • Experience with programming (Python preferred)
  • Experience with sensors, calibration, and/or automotive field preferred
