Title: Soil Scientist, Field Technology Team.

Location: Remote Okay. Pivot maintains offices in St. Louis, MO, Berkeley, CA, Hayward, CA & Ames, IA.

Description:

Pivot Bio is developing microbial products that improve the nitrogen sustainability of agriculture. The soil scientist will be a critical member of Pivot Bio’s Field Technology team. They’ll work with our data scientists, greenhouse team, and field agronomy staff to measure and model the biogeochemistry of our microbial nitrogen products. This will help Pivot Bio better characterize the influence of environmental factors influencing the performance of its microbial product, and assist in the development of future sustainability products such as greenhouse gas emission offsets. 

Responsibilities: 

  • Develop nitrogen dynamics models to help Pivot best recommend how to use its microbial products and to validate nitrogen sustainability products such as greenhouse gas emission offsets.
  • Help develop and manage collaborations with university sustainability researchers.
  • Work collaboratively with Pivot’s agronomy and plant science team, providing soil science expertise to field experimental design.
  • Provide thought leadership for Pivot’s sustainability program, particularly around the quantification and estimation of nitrate runoff and nitrous oxide emissions.

Qualifications:

  • PhD in soil science, agriculture science, or a related discipline providing experience in biogeochemical modeling.
  • Experience in one or more soil biogeochemical models (e.g. DNDC) and/or crop models (e.g. APSIM).
  • Practical knowledge of the impact of soil on agricultural production.
  • Strong modeling skills and ability to write well-documented and clear code.
  • Strong verbal and visual communication skills.
  • A track record of collaboration and being a self-starter.
  • Prior experience with geospatial analysis, spatial statistics, modeling, and software tools.
