Job Description

Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) is the surest path to limitless, clean fusion energy. Our mission is to enable world-wide clean energy for everyone, creating a sustainable environment for current and future generations. We have created a credible path to an operating fusion power plant in 15 years which leverages our novel collaboration with MIT and funding from strategic and financial investors who share our vision. This begins by developing a new class of high-field superconducting magnets that will enable the SPARC tokamak to demonstrate net energy from fusion for the first time. To execute this plan, we are now looking to add talented people to the team who are mission-driven and treat people well, improve our team by adding diverse perspectives and new ways of solving problems, have demonstrated exceptional results through a range of different pursuits, and have skillsets and experience that relate to this role.
CFS has a need for a Grants Administrator to assist us with compliance, tracking, and financial reporting on our various government programs and sponsored research projects. We are a for-profit research & development company pursuing a mission to deliver clean and limitless fusion energy, and a portion of these projects will be funded by federal and non-federal grants or other sponsored research arrangements. The successful candidate will manage a robust and controlled grants administration process within our rapidly evolving startup organization, assisting us to balance compliance requirements with our need to innovate flexibly and rapidly.This job will initially be performed on a remote basis, with occasional visits to the company headquarters in Cambridge, MA when needed and deemed safe to do so. Eventually, this role will be located full-time in Cambridge, MA.

This team member will:

  • Execute finance and administration activities both pre- and post-award to our various federal and non-federal grants and other sponsored research projects.
  • Assist our Open Innovation and Research & Development teams with budget development and administrative portions of proposal submissions.
  • Monitor and analyze revenues and expenditures on collaborative research projects.
  • Coordinate with the Accounting, Open Innovation, and Research & Development teams to provide internal financial updates, prepare financial projections, and execute administrative tasks as it relates to government programs and sponsored research awards.
  • Manage billing / payment process with sub-awardees and external research collaborators
  • Collaborate with external funding agencies and research collaborators to coordinate schedules, budgets, and financial updates, ensuring compliance with all reporting deadlines.
  • Recommend and implement accounting policies to improve the company’s internal control environment to ensure compliance with grant tracking and reporting, including participation in the company’s ERP implementation effort.
  • Serve as the company’s internal subject matter expert regarding government program administration; navigate government documentation and regulations to provide guidance to the organization.
  • Manage annual A-133 audit and other compliance procedures.
  • Other duties and special projects as assigned.

The ideal candidate will have most, if not all, of these requirements:

  • 3+ years grant administration experience, preferably within a for-profit or startup environment
  • Demonstrates working knowledge of government grant operations, regulations and best practices
  • Experience adopting and implementing new processes and systems to enable business growth
  • Moderate-level knowledge of Microsoft excel, including pivot tables, lookups, and SUMIF formulas
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business preferred
  • Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and organized
  • A problem solver
  • An excellent communicator, both written and verbal with the ability to represent the company when interacting with government agencies, external research collaborators and vendors
  • Be comfortable in a dynamic environment a rapid pace of growth and change, self-directed prioritization, and the ability to wear multiple “hats” on a daily basis
