Hannon Armstrong is currently seeking a Managing Director with structured financing experience to join our team in Annapolis, MD.  This individual will work on the Investment Team reporting to the Co-Chief Investment Officers and lead the Structured Investments Group in building and managing HASI’s sustainable investment portfolio. The core responsibilities of the role will include overseeing transaction structuring,  negotiation, and execution, participation in business development and origination activities, identifying primary transaction risks and mitigation plans, and leading and managing the execution team responsible for all aspects of transaction documents, models, and due diligence.     

EDUCATION AND PRIOR WORK EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree from a four-year institution; CFA and/or MBA preferred
  • At least 10-15 years of experience in principal investing in the sustainable energy sectors, ideally including mergers and acquisitions, project finance and structured debt or equity finance
  • Experience in leading teams and transactions, structuring and negotiating transactions involving structured debt and equity investments, including the underwriting and balancing of risk and return in investing

RESPONSIBILITIES - Investing Activities

  • Will be responsible for oversight of investment activities including: sourcing investment opportunities; due diligence efforts of potential investment opportunities and follow-ons; structuring investments including documentation; and working with internal or external teams to identify and implement value creation initiatives. Specific focus will include structuring and ongoing negotiation of terms and transaction documents.
  • Identify key elements of investment opportunities including value and performance drivers and risks, and how those impact the specific opportunity and overall Company performance metrics, finance plans, and ongoing management. 
  • Participate in the development and execution of origination strategies.

RESPONSIBILITIES - Team Management Activities

  • Oversee and develop the Structured Investments Group tasked with providing seamless execution for clients.  Manage transaction execution by members of the team and implement processes within the team.  

RESPONSIBILITIES - Other Corporate Activities

  • As needed, participate or assist other departments, which may include financings, operational, or portfolio management activities, and participation on portfolio company boards.

SPECIFIC RECOMMENDED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Proven track record of structured finance investing
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to work with and manage a team of investing professionals
  • Relevant industry experience in energy, banking, tax equity/equity investing, consulting or the energy/utilities sector
  • Familiarity with energy project finance transactions and documentation
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability and desire to work in a fast-paced, innovative, entrepreneurial environment
  • Ability to work effectively and professionally with clients and vendors at various levels within their respective organizations.
  • Ability to work consistently and competently in a remote environment and to travel as required.
  • Dependable and reliable, excellent at taking initiative, can work independently without close supervision, and be a supportive team member
