Job Description

WHO YOU ARE

As an Industrial Engineer on the Manufacturing team, you are an experienced, hands-on engineer with an aptitude for designing and improving manufacturing layouts and processes to meet production and quality targets. You help improve and streamline Sila’s existing manufacturing lines. You also work on the front-end design and construction of integrated systems for our next-generation battery material factories. Working alongside Equipment, Manufacturing, and Process engineers and technicians, you will orchestrate factory layouts and storage to optimize material flow, eliminate waste, and maximize efficiency. You have excellent communication skills and are able to collaborate seamlessly with internal teammates and external vendors to build and optimize Sila’s future production facilities.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

  • Analyze production schedules, engineering specifications, process flows, and other information from existing manufacturing lines to gain a deep understanding of manufacturing activities, production flows, and storage requirements.
  • Leverage deep understanding of manufacturing activities, production flows, and storage requirements to lead the implementation of efficiency improvements.
  • Use simulation, modeling, careful observation and information gathering to optimize material, equipment and personnel movement within the factory.
  • Work closely with the Quality team to design control systems that satisfy product sampling, testing and reject/quarantine requirements.
  • Work collaboratively with internal teams and external vendors to design facility-wide systems and layouts for scaled-up battery material production.
  • Generate PFDs, layouts, and other detailed documentation of your designs and proposals.
  • Support the setup and monitoring of industrial instrumentation with the Controls and Automation team.
  • Ensure all designs enable a safe environment for manufacturing line personnel.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS

  • B.S. in Industrial Engineering or related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of industry experience (fewer for candidates with an advanced degree).
  • Experience designing and/or improving capital equipment and layouts in uptime-sensitive manufacturing applications.
  • Knowledge of material production processes, costs, quality control, raw materials and other methods for maximizing the efficient manufacture and movement of goods.
  • Expertise with industrial engineering CAD (AutoCAD preferred) software.
  • Strong mechanical intuition and working knowledge of field-deployed electronics, sensors, and actuators.
  • Experience generating outward-facing document packages and working with vendors to get things built
  • Experience with powder material handling systems in manufacturing applications would be nice.
  • Experience with manufacturing discrete event simulation tools (ProModel or similar) would be nice.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Pass a respirator fit test and be able to wear respiratory protection on a daily basis
  • Wear personal protective equipment including, but not limited to, a lab coat, gloves, safety glasses, and steel toe safety shoes
