Job Description

Summary: 

Working with product design, engineering, and factory operations, the Mechanical Design Engineer will design tooling and equipment for the production, handling, and inspection of molded pulp products. You will be responsible for design and successful implementation of pulp mold tooling, robot end effectors, fixtures, jigs, and other improvements to the Zume molded pulp manufacturing systems. 

Responsibilities:

  • Design, build and test state-of-the-art automation equipment for composite processing methods with a focus on reliability and repeatability
  • Perform thorough analysis and validation of mechanical designs, leveraging both hands-on problems solving and thoughtful engineering practices
  • Lead and participate in critical design reviews throughout each design cycle, both for your own designs and the designs of others
  • Work collaboratively with technical and non-technical team members to achieve shared goals
  • Estimate technical risk and time to complete tasks
  • Draft engineering drawings for manufacturing

Skills:

  • Great mechanical design and solid hands-on prototyping 
  • Excellent CAD (Solidworks preferred) skills including creating and manipulating complex assemblies, solids and surfaces, drawings, BOMs 
  • Knowledge and application of GD&T techniques and knowledge of associated metrology approaches
  • Experience designing and executing mechanical and fluid simulations (e.g. Solidworks, Ansys, abaqus, comsol)
  • Experience with additive and subtractive manufacturing design techniques and manufacturing processes
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • You have a vision and can respectfully disagree when you see things differently than others. But you also can recognize when your concept isn't the one that we're moving forward with, and you can get 100 percent behind the new direction
  • Significant experience in engineering documentation (drafting PFMEAs, machine specifications, FAT/SAT documentation, etc.)
  • Electromechanical (automation or robotics) experience highly preferred

Qualifications:

  • Minimum MS in Mechanical Engineering
  • 2+ years of experience in 3D CAD development (Solidworks preferred)
  • 2+ years of experience designing & building machine/automation equipment
  • Exposure/experience in high volume industrial production environments
  • Exposure to composites and a solid foundation in materials
