State and Local Media Coordinator - REMOTE POSITION
POSITION PURPOSE: The successful candidate is passionate about the goal of bipartisan climate legislation and wants to equip regular people to advance that goal. They are responsible for engaging a geographically and politically diverse group of volunteers in state and local media efforts that build awareness and support for climate policy. They can effectively spread a message through print, broadcast, and emerging media.
CCE works to build nationwide support for a revenue neutral carbon dividend approach to address climate change and coordinates with a 501(c)(4) sister organization, Citizens’ Climate Lobby (CCL), when volunteers engage in advocacy for specific legislation.
SCHEDULE: Full-time. Evening and weekend hours may be necessary when working with volunteers across multiple time zones. Expect occasional travel post-Covid.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Train and support CCL’s media-focused volunteers (“media managers”) in chapters throughout the U.S.
- Communicate regularly with media managers about timely media opportunities, via group emails and support calls
- Generate resources to support media managers’ work, such as press release templates, interview talking points, and op-ed templates
- Provide training to media managers so they understand and can execute various media activities, such as pitching stories to local reporters, writing letters to the editor, and giving a successful interview
- Provide one-on-one support to volunteer media managers who need additional training, brainstorming, or help to execute media activities
- Maintain the list of media managers, keeping it up to date as new volunteers participate and other volunteers become less active
Coordinate with staff to ensure message continuity & expand media opportunities
- Work with supervisor and other stakeholders (Marketing, Volunteer teams) to ensure that all state and local media materials and messages are up-to-date and in line with national positioning
- Work with supervisor and other stakeholders (Government Affairs) to identify targeted media opportunities (i.e. generating media in a specific state or district to praise a certain member of Congress for a vote or a bill sponsorship)
- Coordinate with CCL’s State-Level Carbon Pricing Coordinator to identify additional media support opportunities related to state policy
- Coordinate with CCL’s Conservative Outreach Coordinate and volunteers on the Conservative Caucus to grow conservative media coverage of climate solutions
- Explain CCL’s state and local media work to groups beyond the media managers themselves, i.e. the “Emerging Group Leaders” in the organization, or attendees of a conference breakout session
SUPERVISION EXERCISED: This is not a supervisory role, but you may wish to bring on seasonal interns to support your work.
QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in communications, journalism, media studies, etc.
- Familiarity with conservative politics/ideology a plus
- Requires excellent interpersonal skills
- Experience in grassroots work, community organizing, or other volunteer-focused roles preferred
- Requires excellent writing and editing skills
- Experience with editorial writing, pitching reporters, interview skills preferred
- Competent with Google Docs, Google Calendar, Gmail
- Competent or willing to learn platforms such as Salesforce and ActOn
COMPENSATION: $60,000 per year annual salary. Benefits for a full-time position include health insurance (eligibility after a 60-day wait period), dental and vision insurance, and a 401K retirement plan. Two weeks accrued vacation for all first-year employees. An additional week of vacation is accrued after one year of employment with Citizens’ Climate.
