Job Description

Science & Technology Analysis Manager
Developing data-driven insights to accelerate the alternative protein industry

The Good Food Institute (GFI) is at the forefront of the movement to use food technology and markets to solve some of the world’s biggest problems, from climate change and global hunger to antibiotic resistance and the exploitation of animals.

How You Will Make a Difference
In this role, you will have the opportunity to manage a team focused on analyzing opportunities to accelerate the plant-based, cultivated, and fermentation industries by identifying key technological challenges and forecasting the impact of proposed solutions to address those challenges. The purpose of this work is to steer efforts and resources within GFI and among our external stakeholders toward the highest-impact activities and research areas. The Science & Technology Analysis Manager will be responsible for:

  • Collaborating with the Director of Science and Technology to develop and implement a strategic vision for ongoing technical analyses including an impact monitoring plan for informing future areas for analysis.
  • Working collaboratively within the SciTech Department and across departments to align goals, coordinate activities, and report outcomes.
  • Managing a team of at least four GFI scientists who are:
    • Developing rigorous models for assessing current bottlenecks and technical challenges within the alternative protein industry and for forecasting future challenges as the industry grows.
    • Translating the insights and findings from internal and external analyses into public-facing resources (such as white papers, conference presentations, and peer-reviewed articles) and distilling them into actionable recommendations for resource allocation or further research.
    • Articulating proposed solutions to address these hurdles and assessing their relative anticipated impact.
    • Engaging with researchers, companies, funders, and other organizations to guide resource allocation toward the highest-impact opportunities within alternative protein research.
  • Planning scope of work and deliverables, identifying appropriate external partners, and managing external contractors or collaborators for certain aspects of our analyses of the plant-based, cultivated, and fermentation sectors or relevant adjacent sectors.
  • Engaging with prospective research funders to articulate the importance of these analyses for accelerating the growth of the alternative protein industry.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

Who We’re Looking For
The Science & Technology Analysis Manager  must have:

  • A Ph.D. and post-doctoral work in a relevant scientific discipline.
  • Familiarity with the fundamental technologies underlying the alternative protein industry.
  • Experience supervising, mentoring, and managing others.
  • Strong project management skills and a demonstrated ability for high-level synthesis of intersections between multiple projects.
  • Strong writing ability and fluency in technical writing.
  • Self-motivation and ability to work well both independently and in concert with a larger group.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to develop relationships with diverse external stakeholders.
  • Comfort working remotely and in a rapidly growing and evolving organization.
  • Strong support for GFI’s philosophy and mission; demonstrated interest in public health, environmental sustainability, animal protection, or food security.

We want the best people and we don’t want biases holding us back. We strongly encourage people of every color, orientation, age, gender, origin, and ability to apply. Because we value a diverse workplace, we prioritize an inclusive climate absent of discrimination and harassment during the application process and after you join the team.
