Job Description

Who we are:

Creating a planet fueled by reliable, clean energy isn’t what keeps us up at night; it’s what gets us out of bed. At Opus One Solutions, our software platform GridOS® helps us pursue solutions that will change how countries access, optimize and distribute electrical energy. From microgrids that keep things running in the event of an outage to how electric utilities can optimize their operations and allow homeowner feed energy into a power grid fueling the electrical sharing economy.

At Opus One Solutions, we believe some of the best talent in the tech industry share our passion for delivering technology that matters and that will make a difference, in our lifetime and beyond. We want to work with people who love the complexities of software; who believe in its power to transform the world to a better place.

Good people know that great ideas are everywhere and what matters most is practical execution. Turning vision into reality is the hard part. But, when it’s creating technical solutions that support access to renewable energy, it’s an engineering feat worth contributing to.

The opportunity

You will be working to build out the Opus One Solutions data science team focusing primarily on generating high-velocity machine learning models from scratch balancing innovation with practicality targeted at electrical distribution utility customers.

  • Our end-users require the integration of highly accurate energy demand forecasts combined with production level outcomes delivered into operational systems, resulting in a need for a balanced approach to model development.
  • We expect you to be conversant with classical time series techniques (Holt, ARIMA) as well as modern machine learning options including Naïve Bayes (NB), support vector machines (SVM), or gradient boosting (XGBoost). Additionally, comfort with deep learning architectures such as transformers, Long Short-Term Memory Networks (LSTM) and Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN) is expected. Experience with Bayesian non-parametric methods is welcome.
  • While primarily focused on supervised learning problems, as part of the role, you will be investigating a broader collection of business problems that may include stochastic optimization and pattern analysis for electrical utility assets.
  • Energy supply and demand both depend on climate, weather, seasonality, and long-term trends. Your data sources may be clear and well understood or sparse and require investigation. A comfort in data exploration is a must.
  • Your outcomes should be repeatable, scalable, traceable, and defensible.

Who you are?

You are a data scientist working on time series forecasting within the electrical utility space or an adjacent industry where forecasting is prevalent. You feel your skillset can be applied to our problem domain and you are as comfortable chasing a hypothesis as you are handing over your model to production.

We expect you to be able to communicate your results with all stakeholders including technical and non-technical audiences.

It’s still early days for the data science team, though we are world experts in electrical power flow optimization. As such, you will have an opportunity to make a substantial contribution to defining the data science task at Opus One and our proposed approach to real-world business problems, in this case a good one: de-carbonizing the planet.

Here’s what you bring:

BS, MS or PhD degree in computer science, data science, statistics, mathematics, software engineering, engineering, physics, economics, or a related field.

  • Deep understanding of machine learning techniques and algorithms, such as deep learning, NB SVM, Random Forests, and XGBoost.
  • Three plus years of experience as a data scientist performing model development preferably in a production setting. Experience when models go live is a must.
  • Ability to communicate outcomes with common visualization tools including Matplotlib, seaborn or plotly
  • Experience with common data science toolkits including NumPy, pandas, scipy, TensorFlow, PyTorch and scikit-learn.
  • Proficiency working with structured and unstructured data including SQL, APIs, or other data acquisition techniques.
  • Experience in the end to model development process from EDA, feature engineering through to model control and hand-off.
  • Strong applied statistics skills, such as distributions, statistical testing, and regression
  • Demonstrate the ownership and data quality of your work including training, test, and experimental outcomes.
  • Fluent in a production-ready programming language such as Python.
  • Comfort in researching representative metrics; design and validate experiments to measure model performance

  • Solve problems in robust and creative ways demonstrating solid verbal, interpersonal and written communication skills.
  • Lead the end-to-end process of conceptualizing, developing, deploying, and analyzing models
  • Be comfortable communicating externally with subject matter experts, partners, and customers.
  • Collaborate across multiple development, project delivery teams along with technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Opus One is growing! After spending the first four years under the radar focused on research and pilot projects, we’re ready to shine. We’ve been named as one of Canada’s top 10 game-changers by CIX Cleantech, Fast Company’s 2017 World Changing Idea in Energy and one of top 100 Global Cleantech companies for 3 years in the row! We are delivering exciting projects in North America and have partnerships with leading energy players such as National Grid.

At Opus One Solutions we understand that not everyone develops their talent and hones their skills in a traditional way. Different paths and experiences are part of the diversity we know we need to succeed. If you feel you meet all or most of the qualifications we are seeking, take a chance and express your interest here.

We offer:

  • Competitive salary
  • Paid time off for vacation and personal days
  • Annual professional development budget
  • Supplementary health insurance
  • Health Spending Account

Opus One Solutions welcomes and encourages applications from people with disabilities. Accommodations are available on request for candidates taking part in all aspects of the selection process.
