About the role:

The Senior Engineering Manager is accountable for the strategy and execution of the Route Planning and Remote Assistance teams.

Route planning lives at the highest level of the car's autonomous stack and its job is to find discretization and abstractions that accurately capture the intuitive way humans think about driving at a lane level (what it means to be in a lane, what it means for a lane to be blocked, how to respond to unexpected events, how to describe intersections, turns, and lane changes, and the places where it's safe and legal to pullover and drop-off/pick-up passengers).

Remote Assistance is responsible for providing human augmented autonomous vehicle directives safely and in real-time; this involves creating intuitive and responsive UI/UX, establishing a safe and robust communication system with the car, understanding how planning and perception stacks work and how humans can augment car’s capabilities. This role includes setting high-level technical direction by working with Technical Product Managers to build project roadmaps, prioritize work and execute against those plans. This also includes building a world-class engineering organization capable of scaling as the company grows; this includes mentoring and growing strong engineering managers.

Day-to-day responsibilities include:

  • Lead and grow a group of three robotics software engineering teams
  • Work with your team, Technical Project Managers, and external stakeholders to build, prioritize and execute against an engineering roadmap
  • Guide the team to create a technical direction and execution plan to solve ambiguous autonomous vehicle problems
  • Balance interrupt-driven work against those long term plans
  • Create and uphold engineering processes as we scale
  • Represent your team in cross-functional and executive meetings
  • Embody Cruise behaviors: Stay Safe, Own It, Stay Focused, Seek Truth, Work Together, Be Humble

You should apply for this role if you have the following qualifications:

  • Managed multiple teams and initiatives in a fast-paced engineering organization on the company critical path
  • Successfully scaled software engineering teams by growing engineering managers and driving external leadership recruiting
  • A track record of shipping scalable production-quality software for complex products
  • Experience as an engineer delivering results within large-scale, robotics, or safety-critical project environments
  • Self-motivation to proactively lead your team to deliver high quality and value software

Bonus points:

  • Domain experience in path planning, route planning, low latency network systems, UI/UX development, streaming services
  • Contributing production-quality C++ software at scale
  • Exposure to verifying and validating safety-critical software and systems
  • Experience developing autonomous vehicles
