Where in the world of OVO will I be working? 

Reporting to the Head of Health and Safety, OVO Retail, this role is fundamental to supporting and delivering an effective health and safety function. As a Health and Safety Manager, you would be working to support a risk-based approach to health and safety against principal risks for OVO Retail through the delivery of the Health and Safety plan, to make sure compliance with our legislative obligations and controls are in place to help manage risks.

The Compliance & Risk team, which you’ll be part of, is a new one. It was created following the acquisition by OVO of SSE Energy Services and this is an exciting time to join the team as it integrates both businesses, working to deliver a best in class Compliance and Risk Service.

What will I be doing?

As a manager you’ll play a key role in developing and implementing the health and safety strategy. You’ll provide advice and direction on all matters relating to health and safety and employee welfare. The role will involve supporting the business to keep people, assets and the environment safe from harm, and promote a health and wellbeing lifestyle to maintain and improve our members mental health.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Building relationships with colleagues in the wider Compliance and Risk function to ensure an integrated & consistent approach is delivered to OVO Retail colleagues

  • Act as an independent, competent advisor to the business for specialist industry specific technical and safety advice

  • Monitor, analyse and report health and safety performance and define benchmarks, continual improvement and preventive actions.

  • Lead on health and safety reviews

  • Develop a sound understanding of all of OVO Retail businesses and build and maintain a strong stakeholder network

  • Secure business buy-in to health and safety compliance requirements and aid understanding of what good looks like by supporting colleagues to ‘find a better way’

  • Support the business during crisis management events and significant incident investigations

  • Manage escalation process and ensure incidents are managed

  • Represent OVOs interests at appropriate external stakeholder forums

Is this the job for me? 

The ideal candidate will have a passion for health, safety, compliance, communication and business improvement. They will have an ability to work cooperatively within OVO to assist business areas and simplify compliance complexity. They will have experience of delivering high value & quality outputs.

Ideally you will have:

  • Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety Management (NEBOSH / BSC or equivalent)

  • Chartered Member of IOSH (CMIOSH) or working towards CMIOSH

  • Minimum 3 years experience in a similar health and safety role

  • Strong background in gas and electrical safety

  • A good knowledge of health and safety legislation and keep up to date with changes

  • Excellent understanding of governance, risk and control concepts and application

  • Experience of working with businesses to develop and enhance control frameworks. Well organised, structured in approach and able to operate effectively in challenging situations

  • An excellent communicator with strong verbal and written communication skills. Ability to influence and communicate with people at all levels and able to take complex ideas and communicate them simply

  • Resilient in character with strong ethical values and a desire to get it right.
