Electric Motor Mechanical Design

The Job

Turntide provides NEMA and IEC motors for industrial and commercial applications. You will turn the electromagnetic designs of the FEA group into motor designs for our manufacturing partners. This includes all the details including thermal performance, mechanical strength, bearing choices, seals, material selection, wire routing and clearances, etc. Success is when the product meets the requirements and our customers and partners enjoy our product for a long time.

We have three positions open. Successful candidates will have a mechanical background and experience with motors, preferably industrial. You're familiar with Solid Works, have experience solving real world problems and working with manufacturers. You are comfortable with tolerancing, material selection and understand the real-world impact of your suggestions. You are creative in finding solutions and finding ways to test what you are not sure about.

The motor group is responsible for the overall mechanical design. They

  • work with in-house and consulting CAD designers for complete drawing package for vendors and contract manufacturers
  • optimize the designs for materials, cooling concepts, reliability, DFM, FMEA, performance, and cost
  • create customized designs from the standard products to meet specific applications, for example, hazardous locations
  • manage and maintain the designs through life cycle with revision controls and design changes
  • Work closely with cross functional team for design optimization and validation testing

The Requirements

  • Mechanical Engineering degree or equivalent
  • 5+ years of relevant design and manufacturing experience with rotating machinery
  • Strong familiarity with best design practices, manufacturing processes for industrial motors
  • DFM experience
  • Highly familiar with GD&T
  • Familiar with NEMA MG-1 standards
  • Solid Works experience
  • Experience with 1-100 Hp industrial / commercial motors a huge asset
