Job Description

Summer R&D Intern at The Climate Service

About TCS:

The Climate Service provides climate analytics to help the world’s governments, companies, and financial institutions measure and manage the financial risk from climate change. We are a fast-growing, three-year-old company, and our mission is to embed climate data into global decision-making. We believe this will accelerate the transition to a low-carbon economy, and help make the world more resilient to the most important challenge of our time.

About the position:

We are looking for two paid summer interns who will support the efforts of our Research & Development (R&D) team. Interns will support scientific impact function documentation, GIS data-mapping, and/or financial modeling efforts (depending on your experience and skills).

The successful candidates will join our team remotely, working on Eastern time along with our Durham- and New York-based teams.

We're looking for someone who is curious, enthusiastic, and adaptable to join our team for the Summer of 2021. You should have or be working towards an undergraduate or graduate degree with coursework in business and/or sustainability -- or related fields.

The internship will run from approximately June 1 - August 13, 2021, depending on the intern’s academic schedule. Actual start and end date can be negotiated upon hire.

What you’ll do:

As a TCS Summer Intern, you will be responsible for support of our R&D Squad. Some of those responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Impact function (vulnerability model) documentation and organization
  • Transport network data mapping in GIS
  • Implementing financial research and financial risk models

Who you are:

  • Pursuing an undergraduate or a graduate course of study in sustainability, economics, or related fields.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, Google Apps
  • Familiar with project collaboration and interoffice communication tools (such as Asana and Slack)
  • Experienced in GIS and/or financial analysis
  • Experienced in manipulating large datasets and in using programming languages (R, Python) is a plus
  • Excited about the opportunity to engage with an immensely driven and diverse team
  • Excited to be a part of a team working at the forefront of climate change risk analytics

Diversity, equity, inclusion, transparency, and integrity are amongst our company’s primary values. The Climate Service is committed to creating a diverse team, an inclusive work environment, and equitable business and management practices -- including our recruitment and hiring process. In committing to these values, we will be diligent in considering them in our ongoing assessment of who we are, what we stand for, and how we conduct our business.

If this role matches your skills, experience, and motivations then please submit your resume with a cover letter identifying why you feel you would be a great addition to the team. Apply as soon as possible, but no later than Wednesday, March 3, 2021.
