What we do and why it matters
Terrafuse is building AI technology that accelerates physical models of climate and weather risk by orders of magnitude from hours on a supercomputer to seconds in the cloud. Our technology combines our academic expertise in climate science and machine learning, developed from our work at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab and supported by the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Department of Defense, and Microsoft AI for Earth. Our vision is to develop a Query-able Earth in which cloud-native Earth observation and climate data are combined with AI to produce actionable insights into climate risk and energy resources.
Our starting points are wildfire and wind. Extreme wildfire conditions have increased by 50% in the last few decades as a result of climate change and insurance companies are now refusing to insure homes and businesses in california, making it impossible for nearly 1M homeowners and businesses to get coverage for their properties. We have developed a wildfire risk product that solves the problem that homeowners face by accurately quantifying risk property by property, again making it possible for homeowners to get coverage for their safety and livelihoods. We are also developing a wind product to optimize global wind energy production, which is growing 20% year over year as the world transitions to a clean energy economy. Our customers include corporate and government stakeholders in the insurance, aviation, and clean energy industries.
The position
Our longer-term vision is to build a planetary geospatial computing platform powered by AI, and we are seeking someone passionate about climate with deep skills in building data / machine learning platforms to head the effort on getting us to that point.

Our stack
We use the standard Python scientific computing stack and PyTorch for our ML models, Python for the back-end code, Azure and Kubernetes for deployment, and Vue.js for the front-end. However, you will have the liberty to change parts of the stack if needed.
