Mechanical Engineer — Structural Design and Fabrication

Job Description

Remora is hiring a Mechanical Engineer to round out our core team. You’ll be part of a small, scrappy startup, and you’ll get to own major design decisions as we develop the world’s first device that can retrofit onto a semi truck and capture its carbon emissions.

We’re growing fast, so your responsibilities will change over time. In the first few months, you’ll spend just as much time working with your hands in our shop as you do on the computer. You’ll play a key role as we pilot our device with our first customers, preventing thousands of tons of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere.

One day, you might redesign the device to reduce its weight or make a CAD model to mount a new exhaust valve. Another day, you might build a test bench for a new exhaust dehumidification step or write documentation for a contractor repairing our device. And the next day, you could be welding the device or bolting the device into place on our test truck.

As we grow, you’ll have the opportunity to take on new responsibilities and to help build a great company culture. In the process, you’ll help tackle the defining challenge of our time.

Requirements

We’re looking for engineers who learn quickly and care deeply about tackling the climate crisis. Climate change disproportionately impacts communities of color, so we’re particularly looking for engineers who have demonstrated a commitment to racial justice.

It’s most important that you have experience:

• Communicating with people who have different knowledge and backgrounds

• Working in CAD

• Producing manufacturing documentation (e.g. Drawings, STP, DXF)

• Working in a shop

It would be an added bonus (but definitely not essential) if you have experience:

• Conducting load/stress/strain analysis via quick calculations by hand or via Solidworks

• Drilling, cutting, taping, and welding safely

• Designing for manufacturability

Logistics

• Location: Detroit, Michigan

• Start date: April or May 2021

• Compensation: Everyone at Remora owns significant equity in the company, and everyone earns the exact same salary: $80,000.

• COVID: Because we’re building a physical device, these positions will require some in-person work with two to three masked, socially-distanced engineers in our shop.
