About the Role:

The goal of the analytics team is to extract useful insights from Planet’s growing archive of Earth observation data so that wider audiences can easily extract value from our imagery. We are seeking eager software developers to join our analytics engineering group as interns for the summer of 2020. We’ve got a wide variety of exciting opportunities that revolve around indexing and summarizing Planet data with machine learning and computer vision models.

As an Analytics Engineering intern, your possible focus areas include :

- Analytics visibility (statistical summaries, interactive analysis tools)

- Computer vision modeling (spatial feature detection, transfer learning)

- Change detection (anomaly alerting, sequence modeling)

- Scalable backend infrastructure (distributed systems, cloud compute pipelines)

- End-to-end workflows (customer-facing UIs and APIs, machine learning integrations)

Not only will you work on the cutting edge in multiple domains at an agile aerospace company, you will ship production code with mentorship from our software engineers and explore modeling questions with guidance from our machine learning researchers. Throughout your internship experience you will get exposure to great people, valuable skills, and a whole industry of network opportunities.

Impact You’ll Own:

  • Demonstrate new ways to extract and expose value from Planet’s imagery
  • Ship new features to existing analytics products
  • Engage with Product teams to collect feedback on new capabilities

What You Bring:

You’re a software developer, data scientist, or student with programming and analysis experience.

  • Go or Python development experience 
  • Familiarity with REST APIs and Web Apps

It will be helpful (but not required) to have exposure to:

  • Machine learning tools (scikit-learn, keras, tensorflow, pytorch)
  • Cloud compute infrastructure (GCP or AWS, docker, kubernetes, linux/unix)
  • Geospatial analysis tools (GIS environments, geopandas, rasterio)
  • Jupyter notebooks
  • Javascript and react
