Job Description

Lead a team of attorneys to promote a sustainable, secure, and just protein supply

The Good Food Institute (GFI) is at the forefront of the movement to use food technology and markets to solve some of the world’s biggest problems, from climate change and global hunger to antibiotic resistance and the exploitation of animals.

How You Will Make a Difference
In this role, you will have the opportunity to manage GFI initiatives and staff to promote a healthy, humane, and sustainable food system by developing clear regulatory pathways for cultivated meat in the United States and abroad, and by ensuring that alternative proteins do not face undue regulatory burdens. The Lead Regulatory Counsel will be responsible for:

  • Working with the Director of Policy to develop GFI’s strategy to ensure that cultivated meat can come to market safely and to persuade regulators to create a level playing field for alternative proteins.
  • Overseeing implementation of GFI’s regulatory and litigation strategies.
  • Supervising other GFI attorneys focused on policy.
  • Writing and editing regulatory comments, litigation briefs, white papers, and policy briefs.
  • Speaking persuasively on alternative proteins to legal and nonlegal audiences, including the press.
  • Building alliances and cultivating support for shared goals with other nonprofit organizations.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

Who We’re Looking For
The Lead Regulatory Counsel must have:

  • A minimum of five years of legal or regulatory experience.
  • Experience supervising attorneys.
  • Law degree (bar admission preferred).
  • Ability to think strategically about novel issues of law.
  • Understanding of food regulation in the United States.
  • Ability to work independently under pressure and use sound judgment in decision making, including setting and managing priorities and meeting competing deadlines.
  • Exceptional attention to detail.
  • Strong support for GFI’s philosophy and mission; demonstrated interest in public health, environmentalism, animal protection, or hunger relief.

We want the best people and we don’t want biases holding us back. We strongly encourage people of every color, orientation, age, gender, origin, and ability to apply. Because we value a diverse workplace, we prioritize an inclusive climate absent of discrimination and harassment during the application process and after you join the team.
