Position: Bioinformatics Scientist 

Preferred location: Pivot Bio headquarters in Berkeley, CA. 

Description: 

Pivot Bio is looking for a Bioinformatics Scientist to analyze multiple streams of sequencing data informing all stages of our product development pipeline from lab to field, with a special focus on supporting registration and permitting work of our microbial products. The preferred candidate will have a broad familiarity with many types of sequencing data and analysis but especially microbiome/amplicon sequencing and microbial genomics. The candidate will aid in developing, improving, running, and managing our bioinformatics pipelines, as well as working closely with the software engineering team for managing bioinformatics data and cloud computing resourcesAdditionally, the ideal candidate will feel comfortable interfacing with scientists and non-technical personnel on a variety of projectscommunicating complex datasets and findings in a clear, understandable, and actionable manner. This role will be located within our Scientific Computing team, an interdisciplinary group of bioinformaticians, software engineers, and data scientists.  
 

Responsibilities: 

  • Work closely with our regulatory and legal teams to support registration and permitting efforts. 
  • Develop and maintain core bioinformatics pipelines for amplicon sequencing, genomics, and transcriptomics. 
  • Work with plant scientists, microbiologists, bioprocess engineers, and agronomists to answer questions about product efficacy and performance using NGS tools. 
  • Analyze datasets quickly and conclusively to enable rapid decision-making in product development. 
  • Work with other bioinformatics/biostatistics personnel to triage sequencing data requests and provide consultation for various projects. 
  • Train lab and regulatory personnel on running bioinformatics pipelines and basic data analysis 
  • Stay current with computational tools/sequencing methodologies, identifying gaps and needs in Pivot’s R&D pipeline. 
     

Required Skills and Experience: 

  • PhD in biological sciences with coursework and/or research experience in bioinformatics. 
  • 3+ years of relevant experience working with next-gen sequencing data (genomics, amplicon sequencing, and/or transcriptomics) 
  • Strong computational skills, including proficiency in Unix-like systems, virtual environments/Docker, git, documenting code, etc. 
  • Experience writing start-to-finish bioinformatic pipelines using Nextflow (preferred)Snakemake, or a similar tool. 
  • Experience using cloud computing or scientific computing clusters. 
  • Expertise writing scripts in Python (preferred) or R. 
  • Comfortable using APIs and SQL to query and interact with relational databases. 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including demonstrable competency in data visualization. 
     

Preferred: 

  • Experience in agriculture or plant-microbe interactions, preferably in an industry setting
