Job Description

Climate Smart Missoula, a nonprofit organization located in Missoula, Montana, is seeking a Program Director to join our small but mighty team working on creative and equitable climate solutions. The Program Director to focus on developing and implementing Climate Smart Missoula’s signature climate mitigation and resiliency programs, including Building(s) for the Future, Climate Ready Missoula, Summer Smart, and other efforts that support Missoula’s 100% Clean Electricity and climate resiliency goals. The Program Director reports to the Executive Director, and regularly collaborates with other Climate Smart Missoula staff, as well as with local government, partners and business and community leaders.

This is a full-time, Non-Exempt position based in Missoula. Typical work hours are Monday-Friday 9am to 5pm, with occasional commitments outside those hours and the potential for flexible scheduling as needed.


The Program Director will:
● Develop, refine and implement robust climate resiliency and mitigation programs based on available research, best practices, and community needs/capabilities
● Organize and lead meetings of local government, business and community stakeholders
● Plan and execute events, activities, research and reporting
● Work with the Outreach Director to develop educational and outreach strategies and materials for programs
● Assist with web updates, e-newsletters, fund-raising, additional administrative duties or other Climate Smart activities as they arise
● Supervise interns, volunteers, and, potentially, part-time staff.


Key Qualifications and Skills
● Bachelor's degree and 2 years of professional experience in urban/environmental planning, community development, sustainability or other related fields is preferred; other combinations of relevant education and experience will also be considered
● Familiarity with issues related to the intersection between climate change and the built environment, particularly sustainable development principles, policy processes, and environmental justice
● Interest and willingness to get “into the weeds” on technical energy and climate issues
● Ability to effectively work with a diverse range of people
● Ability to balance independent work and teamwork, recognizing the need to take initiative as well as collaborate closely with other staff and partners
● Strong written and verbal communication skills and experience communicating with diverse audiences
● General computer literacy, including MS Office, Google Suite, basic website editing, or other productivity and communication tools
● A willingness to bring a sense of humor, hope, and your own creativity and style to this work and community.
