Job Description

Who is Bird

From our first e-scooter ride in 2017 to the thousands of rides taking place every day, our passionate team and award winning custom vehicles have helped riders complete hundreds of millions of carbon-free trips in more than 150 cities around the world. And we're just getting started.

We are actively searching for a Director of Sustainability to lead the development and drive the execution of Bird’s environmental sustainability strategy, partnerships and programs globally. The leader in this role builds, measures, and monitors annual plans and directs cross-functional teams to continuously reduce the impact of Bird’s operations on the environment. This person should have a strong understanding of the environmental sustainability impacts of production and operations, including energy use, GHG emissions, and waste generated. In addition, the Director of Sustainability will provide expert input to our vehicle engineers and designers to implement activities that further the development of sustainable products. 

The role will be based in Europe and have a global scope. We are accepting applications from candidates across EMEA. 

Responsibilities

  • Own sustainability-related policy issues impacting Bird, identifying strategic opportunities and forming policy proposals / positions when appropriate.
  • Further develop Bird’s sustainability strategy and identify opportunities across the value chain for greater environmental impact. 
  • Create third-party engagement strategies and industry partnerships with environmental advocacy organizations to further improve e-scooters’ impact on broader societal goals.
  • Develop and cultivate Bird’s relationships with environmental policy experts at NGOs, universities, think tanks and international organizations.
  • Articulate a vision for the role of electric vehicle sharing in the contract of cities’ climate action and mobility goals and promote this to government and third party stakeholders.
  • Be an external advocate for Bird, promoting our vision of the future of sustainable transportation through public speaking engagements at industry conferences and events globally, and with the media when required.
  • Partner with the communications team to build campaigns on topics related to sustainability and environmental impact.
  • Vet publicly funded research projects and opportunities, and lead Bird’s involvement as applicable

Requirements

  • 10+ years of experience working in the energy, transportation or sustainability sectors, whether in a government role, the private sector, a consulting firm, NGO or think tank
  • Graduate degree or demonstrated subject matter expertise in sustainability, climate action, urban planning, passenger transportation or electric vehicles
  • Significant analytical experience, including comfort with data and the ability to quickly learn highly technical policy subject matter and communicate it in a compelling, relatable way
  • A global network of sustainability policy contacts
  • Demonstrated ability to be a self-starter, and own priorities within your portfolio
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to drive results cross-functionally
  • Personal passion for sustainable mobility and an ability to evangelize its benefits to cities and stakeholders
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills required in English. Multilingual a plus.
  • Proven ability to speak at events and with media
  • Based in Europe, flexibility to travel as needed
