About the Cruise Legal Organization:

Cruise is creating a new-to-the-world service and a world-changing category of autonomous vehicle mobility. On the legal side, the rules are being written now, and we’re the team charged with helping guide the company on legal and risk considerations as we unlock the future. We’re a collegial group in which every role matters, and you will have an impact on high stakes decisions, working with technical and development teams solving some of the hardest engineering challenges of our generation. This position will report to our Senior Managing Counsel, Employment.

About the role:

Cruise is seeking a hardworking and self-motivated Senior Counsel to join the Litigation, Employment, Privacy & Information Governance team in its San Francisco office. In this role, you will provide pragmatic and business-focused legal advice on a wide variety of employment issues. You will be a key collaborator, problem solver, and thought partner for our People Team (including Human Resources, People Operations, Total Rewards, Learning and Development, Contingent Workforce, and Recruiting teams). Day-to-day responsibilities Include:

  • Partner with and advise the People Team on the entire employee lifecycle (recruiting and interviewing, onboarding, performance management, compensation and benefits, and offboarding), and collaborate on the development of related practices and procedures.
  • Advise on contingent workforce, co-employment, and independent contractor issues.
  • Successfully resolve demand letters and pre-litigation disputes. Successfully and independently manage employment litigation matters including assessing exposure, supervising discovery, and managing both outside counsel and internal resources.
  • Partner with the Employee Relations team on workplace investigations and employee relations concerns, as well as development and implementation of policies and procedures.
  • Promote compliance with legal requirements relating to people, including leaves of absence, ADA, wage & hour, exempt classification, and workplace safety.
  • Support Cruise’s commitment to building and maintaining a diverse and inclusive workplace, free of discrimination and harassment.
  • Partner with HR in developing training for employees, and conduct ongoing training of the HR team on developments in employment law, employee relations best practices, and investigation techniques.
  • Manage outside immigration counsel and act as in-house liaison for the International Mobility team.
  • Troubleshoot business practices that create unnecessary legal exposure, proactively review existing procedures, and recommend improvements.

You should apply for this role if you have the following qualifications:

  • Graduate of an accredited law school with at least 6 years of relevant experience.
  • Active member of a state bar and in good standing.
  • Extensive knowledge of employment and labor laws, ordinances, and regulations applicable to employers like Cruise.
  • Extensive knowledge of best practices for HR/People organizations.
  • Recent and substantial hands-on experience managing matters in employment litigation, federal and state administrative agency proceedings, and arbitrations.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, impeccable integrity, good judgment, strong analytical skills, and a keen sense of humor.
  • Collaborative by nature and able to build strong partnerships.
  • Comfortable in a fast-paced environment and comfortable managing a diverse and complex workload.
  • Flexibility for occasional travel.
  • Strategic problem solver with verifiable history of providing sound and practical advice.
  • Ability to work autonomously, get results, and set priorities.
