What you’ll be doing:

We are looking for a hardworking Technical Program Manager to lead the TPMs in the Robotics department in San Francisco. The Robotics department is responsible for a significant area of the Autonomous Vehicle (AV) software stack such as Planning, Controls and also leads the release process of the software on the vehicles.

As the Lead TPM, you will be responsible for managing and growing a team of TPMs as well as leading planning and execution across the Department. TPMs are responsible for the “when” and the “how” of the program, and hold their teams accountable to deliver on engineering projects to achieve business objectives. At Cruise, we believe in managers who remain deeply technical, and understand the challenges their teams are facing, even though they may not be chipping in directly to the codebase.

Leading

  • Lead and grow a team of TPMs to drive programs in Robotics department
  • Ensure high-functioning, high-output teams that breakdown work into incremental landmarks and drive impactful on-time delivery
  • Work with teams across Cruise to cultivate a culture of test driven development, team critical metrics to drive and building consensus across teams
  • Invest heavily in recruiting, finding opportunities for external engagement to improve the Cruise engineering brand
  • Help define, build, and embody Cruise engineering culture and principles
  • Embody Cruise behaviors: Stay Safe, Own It, Stay Focused, Seek Truth, Work Together, Be Humble

Planning

  • Drive the formulation and review of department roadmaps and objectives on a quarterly and monthly cadence
  • Drive agile planning frameworks that optimize work that should be agile vs planned
  • Partner with Technical Product Managers to turn requirements and technical specs into achievable implementation roadmaps, including planning timelines and landmarks and identifying cross-team dependencies
  • Work with Engineering Managers to ensure teams tackle a balanced assignment of critical initiatives, iterative improvements, and proactive engineering investments. Support calculation of team capacity vs estimated workload, and ensure the team can deliver on their commitments

Execution

  • Ensure smooth execution of programs and continuously improve execution over time
  • Promote quality communication within the TPM group to effectively execute, filter, summarize reporting across the department to resolve, bring up issues and celebrate wins.
  • Lead and improve multi-functional planning and execution processes for other TPMs to follow and clarify blocking issue path for execution decisions
  • Responsible for instrumenting monitoring to measure group efficiency and effectiveness
  • Establish confidence from partner teams to continuously minimize distractions or conflicts and push groups to maximize their output.

Technical

  • Use technical judgement in working with large, cross engineering teams
  • Work with Technical Leads on design decisions, and chip in to the department design reviews to ensure we continue to raise our technical standards

What you have:

  • 6+ years of TPM including as a technical leader (1+ years as a manager)
  • Bachelors, Masters, or PhD in Computer Science, Engineering, or similar technical field
  • Track record of driving execution across large engineering org and driving teams toward the next level of difficulty
  • Experience leading sophisticated fast-paced safety critical initiatives spanning multiple teams and organizations, often with conflicting priorities and schedules
  • Effective at building consensus across different functions.
