Who we are

Little Universe is a digital product studio specializing in making innovation faster, cheaper, and more impactful for our partners. We are committed to working with partners who understand the magnitude of the climate crisis, and take responsibility for their role in shaping a better future. 

We teamed up with GRID Alternatives - a leading nonprofit on a mission to build community-powered solutions to advance economic and environmental justice through renewable energy - to build Access Clean California. In sum, GRID runs the project, and Little Universe is the product team. 

The project

Access Clean California is a state-funded program, administered by GRID Alternatives, to connect California residents with clean energy and transportation equity programs. These programs include grants and rebates for new and used hybrid and electric vehicles, transit vouchers, shared mobility, no-cost rooftop solar power, and affordable loans.

The Access Clean California Benefits Finder tool enables members of disadvantaged and frontline environmental justice communities to learn about the state’s many climate equity programs, find out which ones they qualify for, and begin their applications - all in one place.

The role

This is a fully virtual/remote position and can be based anywhere in the United States. 

You will:

• Execute against the roadmap for Access Clean California, including: our backend api (which automates partner eligibility checking, verification of income and manages application workflows), our internal tools, partner dashboard and api interfaces used by the frontend.
• Build and improve our test suite, refining existing patterns to allow the entire team to contribute towards increasing coverage of both our QA/E2E tests in cypress and our unit testing patterns in jest.
• Enable applicants by contributing to the design and launch of new products that help onboard our users via partners
• Raise the bar for product quality by maintaining a high baseline and quickly fixing and polishing UX issues

You may be a fit for this role if you:

• Have a passion for building to enable partners and customers.
• Have successfully worked in a professional capacity on a cross-functional team with at least 5 other engineers for more than a year. 
• Are comfortable working directly with a product manager as well as technical & nontechnical stakeholders.
• Enjoy being a generalist, focusing on backend, but are not shy to learn & contribute to frontend and infrastructure as needed to solve problems and delight our users. 
• Contribute high-quality code to create trustworthy, resilient and operable backend systems
• Seek out feedback from your users and empathetically advocate for them throughout the product development process
• Take pride in shepherding projects from ideation to completion, where completion often involves partnering with your users and teammates to carefully roll out changes that affect their workflows.
• Thrive in a collaborative environment involving different functions, stakeholders, and subject matter experts

Skills we are looking for:

Good testing & software design fundamentals in any other languages/frameworks accepted too if willing to learn to apply those to JS/node and can ramp up quickly.

  • Frontend Frameworks: React, Redux, Styled Components
  • Backend Frameworks: Node.js, express
  • Testing Tools: jest, enzyme, cypress
  • Databases: Postgres, Docker, prisma & basic familiarity with SQL

• Bonus: Familiarity with Drupal
