Job Description

Form Energy is a team of passionate people tackling the challenge of climate change through transformationally low cost energy storage. Our team members are active learners who enjoy working on tough technology problems in massive markets and embody our values of humanity, excellence and creativity. The company is backed by a diverse set of committed investors and we have raised over $100M to date.We are looking for a Staff Modeling Engineer to join our full-scale reactor team to inform the design direction and validation of our product. The Staff Modeling Engineer will be responsible for creating performance and degradation models for Form Energy’s electrochemical energy-storing reactor. This engineer is expected to collaborate with other modeling specialists across the company, including mechanistic, FEA, cell, and systems modelers. In particular, this role will serve as a key interface between subscale cell and system performance modeling and directly inform product design directions. The ideal candidate will have strong interdisciplinary communication skills to participate in system design trade studies across teams and component design owners.

What you'll do:

  • Create a Python-based reactor performance model, which accounts for specific materials selection and component geometries, among other key design or operational variables
  • Collaborate with cell degradation modelers to create a reactor degradation model, accounting for new degradation modes arising from the device design embodiment
  • Define modeling interfaces (both within software and organizationally) among cell, electrode, and non-electrochemical component models to inform reactor performance
  • Work with the systems performance modeling function to execute design trade studies among component, reactor, and system design
  • Specify experiments, in collaboration with battery engineers, to fill data gaps that inform and validate reactor modeling efforts; collaborate with engineers across teams to interpret electrochemical test data

What you'll bring:

  • PhD in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or similar
  • 5+ years experience modeling electrochemical systems in a product development setting
  • Deep theoretical understanding of electrochemical science and systems
  • Expert in developing models with a scientific programming language; Python experience is preferredExperience with JMP or statistical analysis software is a plus
  • Strong technical communication skills, especially with remote team members
