Job Description

tomorrow.io's R&D Team is a mixture of scientists and engineers committed to generating the best and most novel data and models across all times: historical, real-time and forecast. We also focus on making everything become a weather station (from cars to microwave links to IoT devices). The story just begins when the data hits our ingest and post-processing services. Every product that the user sees is the result of a pipeline of algorithms that needs to be run quickly and continuously. We are the team that builds the architecture behind the data and the models, to prepare the weather analyses, for the Product and Engineering team to serve to the masses.

As an NWP Atmospheric Scientist, you will work as part of the NWP team running complex weather models across the world. You will be responsible for running tomorrow.io’s Bespoke Atmospheric Model (CBAM) including model configuration, pre-launch verification, performance/cost benchmarking, operational launch and maintenance. You will support the operations of applications for weather forecasting, real-time weather analysis, data assimilation, and data quality control systems. Most of your work will be spent working with your team to review requirements, performing initial forecast verification, then launching and maintaining operational CBAM weather forecasts around the globe.

So if you want to become part of a team that leverages a wealth of cutting edge cloud computing technologies that remains state-of-the-art to support the scientific goals, and to work with experts in geophysical fluid dynamics, operational NWP, atmospheric data assimilation, atmospheric data science, ensemble forecast, global modeling, applied mathematics, etc, - This is your opportunity to become part of a winning team that enables tomorrow.io to build modeling systems that are based on rigorous scientific studies and practices while leveraging the growing fields of data analysis and analytics.

What it takes

  • An MS or Ph.D in Meteorology, Atmospheric Science, or similar is required; a research focus in the field of NWP with emphasis on ensemble-based DA methods is a strong plus.
  • 2+ years experience developing and supporting operational NWP systems (or components) is highly desirable
  • Deep understand and experience with the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model and the Gridpoint Statistical Interpolation (GSI) data assimilation (DA) system and/or the WRF DA (WRFDA) system is required
  • Experience and/or familiarity with the Model for Prediction Across Scales (MPAS)
  • Background in developing and supporting NWP systems in an operational setting
  • Strong background in a Linux development environment including experience with high-performance computing (HPC)
  • Demonstrated track record of producing written, technical documentation — papers, reports, articles, anything is fine, but written communication and documentation is vital to our job here

Bonus points

  • Understanding of the WRF, GSI, MAPS and/or FV3 functionality at the Fortran code level, not just the namelist level
  • Experience compiling the WRF, GSI, MPAS, and/or FV3 codes including debugging and optimization settings
  • Experience establishing V&V metrics and performing V&V analyses of NWP systems
  • Experience with meteorological observation data QA/QC such as METAR, ROAB, PREPBUFER etc.
  • Experience performing radar reflectivity DA and/or DA of other precipitation indicators such as from satellites
  • Experience performing satellite radiance DA in all-sky conditions
  • Experience working on cloud computing systems, especially Amazon AWS or Google Cloud
  • Experience using and configuring cloud-based HPC systems including Graphical Processing Unit (GPU) accelerators and Singularity
  • Experience in programming languages such as Java, Python, Go, and/or C++, preferably scientific Python libraries/frameworks used the geosciences (xarray, xESMF, SciPy, sklearn, MetPy, wrf-python, etc.)
  • Proficient in writing code to visualize, analyze, and assess weather forecasts and data.

If you have reached this point and you are super excited but not sure you check all the boxes - we still want to speak with you! Your passion is priceless. Other things can be learned.
