Job Description

Our New York office, Climate Analytics Inc., provides consistent technical support across climate and development related international processes, with a focus on assisting Small Islands Developing States (SIDS) and Least Developed Countries’ (LDCs) diplomats, including Ambassadors, to enhance their impact in multilateral negotiations. Our New York Office also focuses on implementation activities, climate finance access and capacity building support in the Caribbean region and in other regions in close collaboration with other Climate Analytics’ offices. Climate Analytics Inc. partners up with US-based organizations, foundations and academia, to further advance climate science, climate policy research and analysis and concrete action on climate change.

Climate Analytics is an Associate Member of the NDC Partnership (NDC-P) and an Implementing Partner of the Climate Action Enhancement Package (CAEP) of the NDC-P. The CAEP is an offering of the NDC-P, launched in 2019, and aims to catalyze transformational change towards resilient, sustainable, and low-emission development, supporting the objectives of the Paris Agreement for member countries of the NDC-P. The CAEP is designed to deliver targeted, fast-track support to countries to enhance the quality, increase the ambition; and implement nationally determined contributions (NDCs).

Through the CAEP, Climate Analytics is providing technical assistance to Antigua and Barbuda, Benin, Burkina Faso, Grenada, Nepal, and Saint Lucia.

Your Responsibilities

Climate Analytics seeks to contract an Economist to support the execution of the work under the CAEP within Antigua and Barbuda, Grenada, Nepal and Saint Lucia, specifically under the sub-task of developing cost estimates for climate change mitigation and adaptation options.

The Economist will work under the supervision of the Director of CA’s New York office and CAEP project co-leads and in close collaboration with the global Implementation Strategies Team working on the related CAEP activities. The Economist will work closely with the staff of the Governments of the four countries, in order to obtain their input to the tasks, as well as to build their skills and knowledge in this area and ensure they understand the methodology used.

The Economist’s key responsibilities include:

  • Participate in meeting/calls with government, Climate Analytics colleagues, and other partners as appropriate. A work plan should be produced outlining the methodology, timeline, and scope of work for the assignment.
  • Economic data research, collection and analysis for the four partner countries;
  • Development of relevant statistical, econometric methodologies in the context of the revision of NDCs;
  • Structured literature research and review;
  • Based on LEAP modeling, econometric/statistical methodologies, data research, collection and analysis for the four partner countries, develop costing and projections of costs of mitigation and adaptation options, targets and measures, including renewable energy deployment and transition to electric vehicles among others, in the context of the four partner countries;
  • Evaluation of investment needs, including sources and instruments, suitable for SIDS and LDCs;
    Development of econometric methods to help streamlining climate plans into national development strategies;
  • Quantification of co-benefits of mitigation measures, such as for employment, job quality, energy access and security, and for public health and agriculture; and
  • In consultation with the country leads, include costing and projection of costs into country-level assessment reports. This should include country specific costing, methodologies and associated narrative and assumptions.

Your Profile

  • Master’s degree (obtained or on-going) in economics, or development economics, preferably with demonstrable knowledge on climate change related issues;
  • Academic background in statistics and econometrics;
  • Demonstrable interest, prior knowledge and experience in climate change, adaptation and mitigation;
  • Experience working on climate change and/or sustainable development with developing countries, including SIDS and LDCs, is a plus;
  • Modelling experience is a plus;
  • Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office Applications (Word, Excel and PowerPoint);
  • Very good analytical and writing skills;
  • Motivated, hard-working, solution-orientated, flexible with high level of professional integrity;
  • Ability to work independently, ability to travel, good communication skills; and
  • High proficiency in speaking and writing in English (required), French is a plus.
