Safety Research Engineer - Safety Standards and Industry Best Practices

As a Safety Research Engineer focused on safety standards and industry best-practices, you will closely engage with Zoox’s cross-functional teams to support the development of internal safety engineering processes.  You will also represent Zoox in external technical committees and working groups to contribute to the development of safety standards and best practices.

Responsibilities

• Review and summarize existing industry safety standards and best practice activities applicable to the safety of Autonomous Driving Systems (ADS)
• Continue to monitor the development of safety standards and best practice activities and provide updates to Zoox’s internal stakeholders, including Engineering, User Experience, Policy, Legal, Communications, Operations, etc.
• Lead the development of an internal strategy and approval process for Zoox to lead, participate, and contribute to industry Safety Standards and best practice efforts
• Inform Zoox Leadership team on opportunities to incorporate and adapt industry best practices into our Safety Engineering activities.  Participate in crafting the definition, development, and evolution of the Safety Case for Zoox technology.
• Represent Zoox in external engagements in standards committees.  Where appropriate, share Zoox best practices.

Qualifications

• M.S. or higher degree in an Engineering discipline or Computer Science
• Minimal five years of relevant professional experiences
• Knowledge of some existing safety standards applicable to the safety of ADS
• Collaborative team player with strong written and in-person communication skills

Bonus Qualifications

• Hands on experiences applying one or more relevant safety standards in engineering development
• Experiences with participating in one or more industry standards committees
• Deep and extensive understanding of the existing standardization efforts relevant to ADS
• Support or guide government regulation or policy development
