Position: Fermentation and Downstream Process Engineer, Hayward CA

We are looking for an experienced Fermentation Processing Engineer to join the Bioprocessing and Formulation ( BnF ) development team. As a critical member of BnF , you will have responsibilities in designing, execution, and scaling-up novel microbial fermentation-based processes through to downstream processes (DSP). The ideal candidate will be experienced in equipment purchasing, setup, commissioning, maintenance and repair. This will be a hands-on position working with a multidisciplinary team, in a flexible and creative environment required to innovate technology. You will perform associated fermentation and DSP calculations for comprehensive characterizations of all aspects of our fermentation process, syncing these processes across multiple facilities, and delivering specifications that can be used to commission new facilities without compromising yield. This position will report to the Principal Scientist in BnF .

Responsibilities:

  • Fermentation Pilot Plant equipment purchasing, s etup, c ommissioning, m aintenance and r epair.
  • Process Development and Optimization
  • Scale up from high throughput platforms to pilot scale through to commercial scale.
  • Instrumentation and Process Control strategies.
  • Apply Design of Experiment (DOE, JMP) in work flow .
  • Apply knowledge of microbial physiology, biochemistry, metabolism, and process development to improve titer, yield, and productivity of engineered strains.
  • Facilitate the transfer of technology and processes developed in the lab to commercial manufacturing
  • Apply statistical analysis techniques and critical thinking to biol ogical datasets
  • Write technical reports/documentation, SOPs and other business correspondence
  • Ensures technical transfer of procedures and operations is in place for consistent results

Qualifications and Experience

  • MS in C hemical Engineering, Metabolic Engineering, Microbiology or related field
  • Three or more years industrial experience
  • Hands-on experience in operating ferment e rs and improving industrial fermentation processes and DSPs.
  • Expertise in bacterial fermentation optimization .
  • Experience with analytical equipment
  • Experience with downstream processing
  • A proven history of scaling biological processes
  • Demonstrated experience within laboratory work, laboratory protocols, and experimental science
  • Demonstrated understanding of data-driven approach to process development
  • Strong interpersonal and communications skills with proven ability to thrive in a team environment
  • Attention to detail
  • Occasionally able to lift 30+ lbs.
  • Evening and/or weekend work as workload requires
