Job Description

OVERVIEW

We are always expanding our Robotics Engineering discipline, which plays a crucial part in Terramera's research & development success. This job function demonstrates exceptional communication skills, emotional intelligence, mechanical & electrical design and prototyping skills. You will receive coaching and guidance from the VP Engineering and current Robotics Engineers and works closely with the functional team leaders in multi-disciplinary environments across the organization. YOUR MISSION

To design and employ automation devices including stereo cameras, motors and an array of sensors to optimize Research and Development operations as well as interface and write software employing Python and C/C ++ SDKs to enable functional, real-time systems for the facilitation of our advanced bioscience research.

ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Lead the design and implementation of automation platforms to optimize R&D lab operations and mechanical / electrical solutions for greenhouse and field imaging
  • Assemble, test and commission automated systems
  • Design and look over the fabrication of 3D parts and assemblies using CAD software
  • Integrate control systems using microcontrollers, as well as PLCs
  • Select the microcontroller, sensing devices, and actuating artifacts and integrate them
  • Design, prototype, and test electronic board to integrate with the microcontroller
  • Integrate component SDKs and APIs on the Arduino platform, as well as the Raspberry Pi
  • Participate in the development and management of resource plans and costs
  • Perform other related duties in keeping with the purpose and accountabilities of the job

REQUIREMENTS

  • Post-secondary degree in Mechatronics/Electrical/Systems Engineering or related discipline
  • Demonstrated experience and success in automatic system integration
  • Proven ability to rapidly prototype mechatronics solutions
  • Experience in DCS and SCADA control system development using PLC and HMI
  • Understanding of hierarchical control design and implementation and control narratives
  • Hands-on experience in fault diagnosis, troubleshooting and commissioning automated systems
  • Experience with motors and motion control methods (stepper, VFD, servo, DC, etc.)
  • Experience with various actuation systems (hydraulic, pneumatic)
  • Experience with 3D design using CAD software (e.g. SolidEdge)
  • Providing fabrication instruction to the machine shop
  • Experience with programming Arduino and Raspberry pi platforms using C/C++/Python
  • Experience assembling and integrating electronic components (prototyping on breadboards, soldering final pieces, etc.)
  • Knowledge of electrical power supplies, fuses, and circuit breakers
  • Ability to read, interpret and generate engineering documents
  • Matured knowledge around theory and practices in robotics
  • Solid knowledge and experience on communication protocols and interface circuits
  • Capable of performing research on best practices and making it consumable for other team members

PREFERENCES

  • Portfolio of completed mechatronics projects available for review
  • Comfortable with Ubuntu Linux development environment
  • Familiarity with ROS, Gazebo for robot control, simulation and motion planning
