Job Description

OVERVIEW

We are seeking experienced GIS Engineer/Remote Sensing Scientists to join our Soil Carbon team. We are working on ambitious projects to quantify and sequester carbon in soil and transform how food is grown, globally. The GIS Engineer/Remote Sensing Scientist will lead the GIS team to develop new cutting-edge methods and tools for creating and scaling predictive soil models using geospatial and remote sensing data, unprecedented field samples, and IoT sensor data. Reporting to the VP Engineering, the successful candidate will work closely with our Robotics, Machine Learning and Software Engineers.

The successful candidate will make a mission-critical impact, as their deliverables will contribute to the revolutionary solution as part of the world-renowned Soil Carbon program - aimed to bring together farmers and clean technology to turn climate change, economic crisis, and food insecurity into opportunities.

YOUR MISSION

To lead the inaugural design and advancement of our proprietary GIS and remote sensing work in soil carbon analysis to accelerate regenerative agriculture that benefits farmers and growers, the economy, and the global population.

ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Innovates new methods and tools for the development of predictive soil models using geospatial and remote sensing data, field samples and IoT sensor data
  • Acquires, cleans, processes, and analyzes large-scale geospatial datasets for agricultural applications, including satellite imagery, elevation data, UAV/drone products, weather/climate model predictions, and IoT data
  • Leads, supervises, and coaches junior GIS and remote sensing team
  • Assumes a leadership role in organizing and managing various large-scale geospatial projects
  • Partners with and receive guidance from our Software and Machine Learning Engineers to put your models into production
  • Develops streamlined pipelines for digital soil mapping and other remote sensing data analysis
  • Contributes to the planning of field work campaigns for soil sampling and other agricultural science purposes
  • Coordinates workflow on multidisciplinary projects with the wider multi-disciplinary Research & Development team

REQUIREMENTS

  • Master’s degree with 5+ years’ professional experience or PhD with 2+ years’ professional experience in GIS/Geomatics, Remote Sensing, Agricultural Sciences, Environmental Science, Soil Science, Computer Science, or a related field
  • Strong background in geospatial and remote sensing data analysis
  • Experience planning and supporting geospatial research projects involving multiple roles and stakeholders for agricultural and/or environmental applications
  • Experience working with various levels of remote sensing data (multispectral, hyperspectral, SAR) from both UAV and satellite sources (Landsat, Sentinel 1/2, WorldView, Planet)
  • Advanced proficiency using open-source geospatial libraries in Python (rasterio, geopandas, shapely), R (raster, RSAGA, RStoolbox), and the GDAL/OGR suite

PREFERENCES

  • Operational experience in digital soil mapping
  • Experience managing project teams for GIS and/or remote sensing applications
  • Track record of peer-reviewed publications in relation to soil science and/or agricultural sciences
  • Experience with Google Earth Engine and cloud computing
  • Experience using machine learning libraries in Python (Pytorch, Tensorflow, OpenCV, Scikit-learn, Scikit-image, etc.)
  • Experience applying remotely sensed data within process-based agricultural/landscape simulation models
  • Experience with geospatial database management
