Job Description

The R&D Team is a mixture of scientists and engineers committed to generating the best and most novel data and models across all times: historical, real-time and forecast. We also focus on making everything become a weather station (from cars to microwave links to IoT devices). The story just begins when the data hits our ingest and post-processing services. Every product that the user sees is the result of a pipeline of algorithms that needs to be run quickly and continuously. We are the team that builds the architecture behind the data and the models, to prepare the weather analyses, for the Product and Engineering team to serve to the masses.

We’re looking for an Atmospheric Scientist with a focus on Satellite/Radar Specialization to make sure we are building the best weather platform in the world. You'll Contribute to the development of a real-time, rapidly-updating global precipitation blended rain rate solution utilizing both active and passive satellite scans and ground based Doppler radar data. You'll also Prototype and implement these systems on distributed, cloud-based infrastructure using scientific Python and related software packages.

What you'll do:

  • Collaborate with peers on creating the most accurate and timely global and regional precipitation products
  • Thoroughly document all of your work, issues, recommendations and verification results
  • Iterate on configurations based on model performance and seek to improve accuracy when necessary
  • Support the team by providing general scientific contributions in a collaborative environment
  • Support the team in developing a robust R&D roadmap focused on future technological investments to support current and future product development

What you bring:

    • Strong background leveraging the PyData stack (pandas, scikit-learn, xarray, dask, numba, etc) to build analysis tools and data processing pipelines for geo-spatial data such as blended precipitation rates, re-analysis, or other geoscientific datasets
    • High level of experience working with environmental remote sensed datasets and radar derived datasets
    • Experience in applying statistics to solve problems in the atmospheric sciences, such as processing observed model/observations from sources like NOAA or ECMWF, assessing uncertainty and predictability, or applying precipitation statistical corrections
    • Proficient in writing code to visualize, analyze, and assess satellite derived weather data
    • A Masters degree in meteorology, civil/environmental engineering, physics, statistics, or any other field with corresponding coursework and research in atmospheric science
    • Team player with aptitude for problem solving with teams and the ability to clearly articulate objectives, updates, plans, and issues with team members and management
    • Demonstrated technical proficiency and communication skills both written and spoken, are required for this position
  • Bonus Points
    • Ph.D in related field
    • Experience processing and applying quality checks on level 2 radar data
    • Prior work with GIS, particularly open source applications
    • Can share an existing portfolio of work, either on GitHub or a personal website
    • Familiarity computing on the cloud
    • Experience with open-source software development

If you have reached this point and you are super excited but not sure you check all the boxes - we still want to speak with you! Your passion is priceless. Other things can be learned.
