Job Description

WHO YOU ARE

As a hands-on engineer with an aptitude for learning new things, you will focus on developing and optimizing the performance of electrolyte systems for next-generation lithium-ion batteries. You enjoy a collaborative environment, and have the communication skills and mental flexibility to work cross-functionally with research scientists, process engineers, and operations technicians to solve key problems. You are excited about innovating on battery technology, and are eager to apply your technical know-how, collaborative skill set, and resilient passion to bring our technology to market.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

  • Design and iterate on electrolyte formulations to optimize the performance of cells made with Sila materials
  • Develop electrolyte characterization techniques to determine formulation-performance relationships and offer chemical and cell level improvement strategies
  • Proactively invest in our company values and vision and champion them as we grow
  • Establish effective collaborations with folks from the Research, Process, Product and Deployment teams to develop product driven solutions for new Sila materials
  • Work independently to direct and communicate development efforts, troubleshoot problems, and drive results to completion

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIREMENTS

  • Exceptional experimentation and product development skills paired with an analytical ability to evaluate from first-principles understanding
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new technologies and improve upon them
  • Holistic and practical approach to problem solving, driven by curiosity and attention to detail
  • Bachelor’s degree in science or engineering (Chemistry or Chemical Engineering would be nice)
  • 5+ years of work experience (fewer for candidates with an advanced degree)
  • Knowledge of chemistry (organic, polymer, inorganic), electrochemistry and materials science and related characterization techniques is a definite plus
  • Experience with lithium-ion battery chemistry/construction/failure analysis is a plus

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Pass a respirator fit test and be able to wear respiratory protection on an occasional basis
