The Position

We are looking for an experienced embedded engineer who is passionate about physical computing and electronics, and loves helping to bring designs from concept to product. This role will primarily be focused on scaling, production and testing, dfm. There will also be opportunities to contribute directly to new designs. You have broad experience in electrical engineering, writing embedded firmware, and working with Python. You’re excited to have the opportunity to grow your craft by collaborating with electrical and software design engineers on architecture and component selection. As part of a small and amazingly multi-disciplinary team including software engineers, mechanical and electrical engineers, product designers, scientists, generalists, and salespeople, you relish the opportunity to teach and learn from completely different domains.

Some projects you’ll be a part of:

  • Building new integrations for Spotter and Smart Mooring.

  • Bringing production of next generation platforms on-line.

  • Process and Test development.

  • Working with new and existing suppliers to ensure timely delivery of high quality components and sub-systems to Sofar

  • Integrated system testing, open ocean deployments, and the occasional throwing of things out of airplanes to see what breaks.

Responsibilities

  • Produce reliable hardware products to meet business targets for production output.
  • Work with existing suppliers and contract manufacturers to troubleshoot failures, implement changes based on Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Assembly (DFA).

  • Critically analyze product and component designs to specify manufacturing and finishing operations, as well as the order of operations and/or assembly.

  • Work with design engineering to assess impact of design changes and new component designs on manufacturing and supply chain.

  • Work with the supply chain team on failure analysis, new supplier assessment and training suppliers

  • Make recommendations to improve production processes to improve quality, and reduce cycle time, cost and schedule.

  • Manage our relationships with contract manufacturers, vendors and suppliers.

  • Capture detailed Manufacturing Process Instruction documentation and train production technicians on them.

Minimum Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, industrial engineering or a related field. Four years of comparable experience may be substituted.

  • Knowledge of manufacturing systems, controls, processes and techniques.

  • Experience with vendor and supplier management.

  • A passion for or connection to the Oceans.

  • Experience shipping products in aerospace or automotive.
