Job Description

Who are we?

Sidewalk Labs is an urban innovation company that tackles cities' greatest challenges. We create products and solutions, invest in new companies, and help developers build more sustainable, innovative, and equitable places around the world. Our ambitious vision requires us to push ourselves beyond conventional thinking, and we work hard in pursuit of our mission. Our cross-disciplinary team consists of experts from real estate, urban planning, government, finance, technology, and engineering, among other backgrounds.

Our urban innovations include Delve (a generative design product that empowers real estate teams to design better, faster, with less risk), Mesa (an easy-install kit for commercial buildings that cuts energy costs, improves tenant comfort, and simplifies building operations), Pebble (a low-cost vehicle sensor to help manage parking and curb space), and Affordable Electrification (a new way to manage home energy use to meet a customer’s monthly budget). We're also developing an offsite construction company that can deliver high-quality mass timber buildings for more sustainable living and working.

With the potential to radically improve quality of life in cities for all, our work is both exciting and complex. We are working to achieve something unprecedented — help us build it!

What is the role?

As part of our growth, we are excited to add our first Associate Director, Equity Administration to our People Ops team. We are looking for a subject-matter specialist who has experience in the design, implementation, and administration of equity programs, and can own this important workstream relatively independently.

This role primarily focuses on equity administration at the start. As we are a small, scrappy and growing team, we envision that within 6-12 months, this role could evolve to oversee compensation management. For candidates who have specialized in equity administration, this could be a way to expand your expertise and drive towards a career in Total Rewards that includes compensation.

This role requires a combination of topical leadership, technical skills, and the ability execute and manage equity compensation details. Day-to-day, you will work closely with the Legal, Finance & People Operations team to:

  • Administer all equity grants (setting & reviewing new hire grants), exercises and terminations, partnering with the People Ops, Payroll, Legal and Tax teams.
  • Maintain the company’s employee equity database, updating information and running required and requested summary and detail reports (e.g. on equity pool usage, or as input for broader cap table management).
  • Prepare and distribute grant documentation and agreements for new hires and ongoing grants.
  • Prepare special analyses and recommendations on subjects such as incentive compensation, bonus plans, sales compensation or stock options.

What are the deliverables?

Within your first 3 months you will:

  • Help us set up our company Long-Term Incentive (LTI) Program in Carta.
  • Evaluate our current long-term compensation communication materials (including those used for onboarding, trainings, and offboarding).

Within your first 6 months you will:

  • Communicate the details of our equity awards, programs, and policies, together with your partners on the People Ops, Legal, and Finance teams, so that employees understand them clearly.
  • Become the go-to person for our equity programs within Sidewalk Labs who answers employees’ questions and resolves problems.

After 6 months your scope could evolve to include more aspects of a Compensation role:

  • Support annual external benchmarking practices and manage relationships with survey providers.
  • Participate in compensation surveys to collect and analyze competitive salary information to determine Sidewalk Labs’ competitive position.
  • Work with the People Ops team to review requests for new or revised job classifications to determine appropriate salary grades.
  • Drive the completion of pay reviews and provide recommendations to defined annual merit, promo, equity guidelines, and target bonus opportunities in line with program objectives.
  • Understand and anticipate market trends to recommend improvements to compensation plan designs, including completing pay equity studies, and incentive plan reviews.
  • Evaluate compensation programs for different internal teams to ensure they are internally equitable, externally competitive, legally compliant, and aligned with the relevant compensation philosophy.
  • Ensure governance plans are in place and communicated so that compensation policies are consistently followed within the business.

What We Expect

To thrive on this journey with us, we believe you’ll need 6+ years of relevant experience, and have examples for the below:

  • Problem Solving: Provide practical equity compensation guidance for moderately nuanced situations, taking into account an assessment of SWL’s past practices. Help solve problems with multiple approaches to reach an optimal solution by leveraging analytical skills.
  • Develop client partnerships Influence across diverse teams to align resources and customize employee communications.
  • Building Cross-Functional Relationships: Capable of influencing and developing strong cross-functional working relationships and communicate with business partners to solve problems.
  • Communication Skills: Effectively communicate equity and long-term incentive policies and practices to Sidewalkers through compelling, relevant materials.
  • You care. You connect with the mission of your work here and are committed to creating more equitable and inclusive outcomes both in the workplace and in the work you do.

We are very excited to hear from you.
