Job Description

Form Energy is a team of passionate people tackling the challenge of climate change through transformationally low cost energy storage. Our team members are active learners who enjoy working on tough technology problems in massive markets and embody our values of humanity, excellence and creativity. The company is backed by a diverse set of committed investors and we have raised over $100M to date.Role Description We are looking for a Staff Modeling Engineer to join our systems team to build energy storage system performance models which will be used as the basis for designing our multi-day storage product. The Staff Modeling Engineer will be responsible for engaging with the battery team, the systems team, and the market analytics team to develop modeling tools which capture the electrochemical performance of our product under real world operating conditions, equipping those teams with the tools they need to make trade decisions between cost, performance, and durability. This engineer is expected to collaborate with the engineers developing the mechanistic battery models but need not be an electrochemist. The engineer is expected to have experience with systems modelling at a high level and proven abilities for abstracting and simplifying complex systems.

What you'll do:

  • Integrate cell-level electrochemical models into a comprehensive system performance model that accounts for loss and degradation factors from the cell-to-system
  • Formulate, implement, and validate appropriate models for each subsystem (e.g., thermal management, air handling)
  • Deliver module and system electrical and thermal models which accurately represent dynamic performance and degradation behaviors
  • Collaborate with systems engineers to implement modeling capabilities and features to inform product trade studies, including hardware design, software algorithms, and system operation procedures
  • Collaborate with other engineers to inform development of battery management system algorithms
  • Work with the battery performance modeling function to execute design trade studies among component, battery, and system design
  • Collaborate with battery engineers to specify experiments to inform and validate system modeling efforts; collaborate with engineers and scientists across teams to interpret test data

What you'll bring:

  • MSc or greater in Physics, Engineering, or similar technical field
  • 5+ years experience modeling performance of energy storage or renewable energy systems in a product development setting
  • Expert in Python as a scientific analysis and modeling platform
  • Experience with JMP or statistical analysis software is a plus
  • Strong technical communication skills, especially with remote team members
  • Must be able to obtain US work authorization
