Position: Research Technician, Berkeley, CA

We are seeking a detailed oriented Research Technician to join our growing Fermentation and Formulation team. As an integral part of this team, this role will assist in testing both pre-commercial strains and early discovery strains in differing growth conditions and formulations to help identify optimal growth conditions for our microbes a nd formulations that improve long-term stability . In addition to working on established protocols, this role will collaborate within and across teams to develop and improve assays and processes.

Responsibilities:

  • Support the team in screening media for pre-commercial and early discovery strains
  • Execute specified assays designed to assess growth and robustness of cells in various media types and culturing conditions
  • Perform Routine tasks such as making media, viability plating, filling flasks, etc.
  • Follow specified procedures to develop reliable quantitative data on growth metrics and performance indicators
  • Follow standard operating procedures to execute assays using standard sterile techniques
  • Troubleshoot and assist with developing protocol iterations, proactively finding ways to incorporate automation techniques
  • Assist in assay design and planning processes
  • Documents detailed observations

Qualifications and Experience:

  • BA/BS in chemistry, biological science or biotechnology with laboratory experience, or AA with 2+ years of full time experience
  • Comfortable with standard microbiology and molecular techniques such as media prep, cell counting, CFU/viability plating and microbial identification
  • Familiar with basic laboratory equipment and sterile technique. Experience with standard microbiology techniques such as viability plating, cell counting and microbial identification a plus
  • Attention to detail and ability to effectively perform tasks as directed by supervisor or according to an SOP
  • Excellent communication, observation, documentation and problem solving skills
