Job Description

The Company

At Span, we are building products to drive the rapid adoption of renewable energy and enable a more modern, flexible grid. Span’s smart panel replaces the standard electrical panel to become the center for connected power in the home, providing intelligent load-balancing and revolutionary edge-of-grid controls through the Span mobile app.

The Role

We are seeking an experienced and driven manufacturing test engineer who will be the point person on a mixed internal/external team developing and implementing manufacturing testing of the SPAN smart electrical panel at our contract manufacturer. As our first full-time engineer working on manufacturing test, you will lead the effort to scale up Span’s manufacturing test capability from low- to medium-volume manufacturing, drawing on your prior experience in manufacturing test to help us ramp quickly and smoothly to meet the growing demand for Span’s products.

As part of this, you will:

  • Design and develop manufacturing test fixtures for electronic/electrical systems for the SPAN product.

  • Make key build-vs-buy decisions about test fixtures; help find and select vendors.

  • Gather requirements from Span engineering and write/refine manufacturing test plans.

  • Lead project teams of Span engineers and third-party vendors through the full test fixture development process, including test plan development, fixture build, software, and data reporting.

  • Project manage resources, budgets and project schedules, working with components/sub-systems suppliers as well internal cross-functional teams.

  • Manage relationships with third-party fixture development shops and our CM’s manufacturing test team.

  • Participate in product design reviews and offer DFT feedback to Span engineers.

  • Aid the NPI team as needed in troubleshooting and supporting test fixtures on the line.

About You

Required Qualifications

We are seeking a seasoned test engineer who has:

  • A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent with typically 6+ years experience.

  • Strong fundamentals in electronics engineering with good analytical and problem solving skills.

  • Professional experience deploying functional test fixtures for PCBAs and full products in a manufacturing production environment.

  • Professional capability with either Python or LabView test scripting.

  • Working knowledge of databases and database management.

  • Solid abilities with lab equipment (e.g. high speed oscilloscope etc.) and hardware troubleshooting.

  • Excellent project management skills, including written and verbal communication. Ability to effectively communicate testing architectures, plans, proposals, and results, and negotiate options across all management levels.

Bonus Qualifications

We would love to hire someone who has:

  • Knowledge of design for test requirements in support of both flying probe or ICT, and functional tests.

  • Created or managed data visualization tools and dashboards (Tableau, PowerBI, etc).

  • Experience working with contract manufacturers.

  • Knowledge of industrial safety requirements such as UL 508, OSHA, etc.

  • Demonstrated success working in a cross disciplinary, multi-cultural environment.
