Senior Drivetrain Engineer

CalWave is seeking a dynamic and innovative Lead Drivetrain Engineer to further advance CalWave’s proprietary and high-performance wave energy converter technology to multi-unit commercial scale deployments. The selected individual will work closely with CalWave engineers and CalWave’s world class industry and R&D partners (including UC Berkeley, Sandia National Labs, NREL, and others) to support the drivetrain architectural design of CalWave’s Wave Energy Converter and support design evolution and refinement of overall system architecture and associated systems.

The preferred candidate should have experience designing rotary drivetrains for large heavy duty applications (100 kW+), experience with design of coupled gearing, electric machine, and/or hydraulic machine involving sizing, specification, procurement and operation of rotary drivetrains.

The preferred candidate should possess strong analytical and technical skills, with demonstrable ability to understand complex systems, identify both opportunities and hurdles to drivetrain development from a technical and cost perspective, and develop conceptual and detailed modeling tools to capture potential impacts and benefits at the system level.  The ideal candidate will also have experience in cross-functional coordination with technical disciplines involved in hardware prototyping activities, Hardware-In-The-Loop testing, power system managing and storage (batteries, capacitors), and correlating control design.

This role will also include defining and executing system-level design trade studies to inform the cost and performance-optimizing system designs. Subsequently, this role will focus on developing and de-risking mechanical design concepts and assembly approaches to realize a scalable, modular product architecture that is readily field assembled.
