How You Will Make a Difference
In this role, you will have the opportunity to support GFI’s mission by providing legal advice and support to GFI’s program teams. Your main areas of support will be the Policy, Corporate Engagement, and Development departments. Under the guidance of the General Counsel and Vice President of Administration, the Legal Counsel will be responsible for:

You will be responsible for providing advice on a wide range of topics which may include contracts, intellectual property, nonprofit laws and regulations, antitrust, lobbying compliance, security licensing and broker-dealer laws, privacy and security.
  • Reviewing agreements, driving the continuous improvement of standard legal forms, and implementing best practices for document management.
  • Drafting policies, legal memoranda, and correspondence.
  • Conducting legal research on federal and state laws and various other issues related to GFI’s ongoing nonprofit operations and future strategic initiatives.
  • Utilizing the services of GFI’s third-party provider for fundraising registrations, completing annual state charitable registrations, and handling any related issues that arise outside of the annual renewal process.
  • Completing various administrative tasks as requested, such as corresponding with outside parties, compliance tracking, and document management.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

Who We’re Looking For
The Legal Counsel must have:

  • Admission to the bar in one state, and at least 4 years experience as a practicing attorney at a law firm or inhouse (prior nonprofit experience preferred).
  • Experience working across borders and with international affiliates.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Meticulous attention to detail and the ability to produce high-quality work in a dynamic environment.
  • Ability to exercise discretion and judgment with the handling of sensitive and confidential information.
  • Impeccable ethics.
  • Ability to quickly become an expert in new areas of law as areas of responsibility are assigned.
  • A passion for both your work and for working well with other members on the Collaborative Assistance Team in a supportive and drama-free environment.
  • Comfort working remotely and in a rapidly growing and evolving organization.
  • Strong support for GFI’s philosophy and mission; demonstrated interest in public health, environmentalism, animal protection, or hunger relief.

We want the best people and we don’t want biases holding us back. We strongly encourage people of every color, orientation, age, gender, origin, and ability to apply. Because we value a diverse workplace, we prioritize an inclusive climate absent of discrimination and harassment during the application process and after you join the team.

Research indicates that men tend to apply for jobs when they meet just 60% of the criteria, while women and other marginalized groups only apply if they are a 100% match. If you are passionate about GFI’s mission and think you have what it takes to be successful in this role even if you don’t check all the boxes, please apply. We’d appreciate the opportunity to consider your application.
