Job Description

OVERVIEW

We are seeking an inquisitive Machine Learning Researcher who is responsible for supporting the seamless translation of high-quality research papers & technical literature into useful lab prototypes. The candidate will support the Chief Technology Officer and the multi-disciplinary Research & Development team to identify and support the improvement of novel methodologies in study design and objectives, costs, and timelines to achieve milestones of the research program. 

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS                                     

Reporting to the Chief Technology Officer, the Machine Learning Researcher will work with diverse-skilled teams, such as Soil Carbon, Computational Chemistry, Robotics, Software, and other members of the Machine Learning group.

 ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Identify, compile and peruse research papers, producing concise summaries to be presented to the Chief Technology Officer and relevant stakeholders
  • Extend, transform and apply knowledge acquired from scholarship to research and appropriate external activities
  • Assist in establishing a sound research base within Terramera’s machine learning group in order to develop and sustain research objectives and initiatives
  • Quickly assess and test usefulness of conference papers with provided code
  • Communicate regular status updates to the Company’s Research & Development department and leadership
  • Help create internal and external presentations translating technical subject matter into language accessible by non-technical audiences
  • Trial, assess and implement appropriate study designs (e.g. meta-analysis, cross-sectional studies)
  • Identify novel applications for machine learning models with respect to plant and soil health
  • Identify best practices in efforts to support the development of a research agenda
  • Define and enforce risk management practices in preparation and/or anticipation of necessary pivots toward experimental techniques
  • Keep abreast of latest trends, news and best practices

REQUIREMENTS

  • M.Sc. or Ph.D. in Engineering, Computer Science, or relevant quantitative field
  • Minimum 2 years of experience or Post-doc in the Machine Learning/AI discipline
  • Successful track record of conducting original and publishable research and transferring findings into production, preferably in an academic setting
  • Strong background in mathematics
  • Proven achievements in research, demonstrated by a high-quality publication record or equivalent output
  • Proven experience in conceptualizing, evaluating, and selecting complex research study designs
  • Fluent in programming (any language) and an interest in developing and applying programming skills
  • Matured background in Deep Learning packages such as Tensorflow or PyTorch
  • Knowledge of the Agile project management methodology is an asset
  • Background in Environmentalism, Soil Science, Soil Organic Carbon, or Agronomy is an asset
  • Portfolio of machine learning projects and/or published papers available for review is an asset

LOCATION 

  • This position is remote based in Canada, preferably in BC.
