Job Description

Role    Manager, Innovations Program

Organization REBA and the REBA Institute

Location    Washington, DC or Boulder, CO

Position Overview

This position will support an exciting new initiative for the REBA Institute called the Next Generation Carbon-Free Energy Procurement Initiative (NextGen Procurement Initiative). The NextGen Initiative aims to expand the suite of energy procurement options for energy consumers to optimize decarbonization impact of their electricity procurement choices. To do so, this initiative seeks to:

  • Drive higher-impact procurement decisions by ensuring access to consistent, time- and location-relevant data on clean energy usage and GHG emissions.
  • Galvanize buyer demand across a broader portfolio of zero-carbon options by expanding accounting mechanisms and spurring the creation of new contracting and accounting mechanisms, as well as new recognition programs.
  • Evolve the prevailing narrative around grid decarbonization and buyer impact, by updating and expanding leadership recognition programs.

This role will be supporting a small execution team developing and running the program in collaboration with external partners, such as the Clean Air Task Force, and a large set of multi-sector stakeholders.  As such, this role will need to demonstrate executive-level coordination with strong written communication, demonstrate strong technical and analytical skills, be comfortable with the inherent ambiguity of creating a new program and be able to maintain a simultaneous focus on implementation tasks and the overall project objectives.

Core Responsibilities:

  1. Build strategy to activate communities of practice – convene key stakeholders and build coalitions in support of key reforms, including NGOs, industry groups, and thought leaders.
  2. Develop and support strategy to educate and engage energy buyers on procurement and advocacy opportunities – identify needs and gaps; drive alignment on priority areas; develop criteria, principles, and frameworks for engagement; and facilitate opportunities to propose solutions.
  3. Lead development of authoritative resources – including guiding principles, primers, white papers, guidance documents, policy principles, and frameworks, as well as thought leadership pieces informed by energy customers and industry experts.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree and 7+ years’ experience or equivalent professional experience.
  • Ability to understand complex problems and develop insightful analyses using quantitative and qualitative approaches; ideally familiarity and/or experience in GHG emissions accounting and reporting and energy attribute certificate markets.
  • Willingness to support and help build a new initiative and demonstrate entrepreneurial thinking and flexibility to easily adjust priorities when new information is presented.
  • Excellent communication skills including the ability to listen actively and effectively, and present key points clearly and accurately, both verbally and in writing with a strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to develop and execute project plans, and lead/support junior staff to drive high quality products and results.
  • Ability to develop, maintain, and sustain relationships across a diverse group of constituents and stakeholders to solve differences in opinions, devise plans in the face of ambiguity, and manage multi-stakeholder settings to drive forward solutions.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, identify risks and challenges, and proactively seek support, as needed.

Desired professional attributes:

  • Industry knowledge of energy and carbon accounting protocols, frameworks, and recognition programs.
  • Direct experience with corporate procurement and reporting of renewable energy and/or other carbon-free technologies.
  • Experience with multi -stakeholder consultation processes that seek to remove ambiguity within strategic, system-level challenges.
  • Experience in design, delivery, and execution of educational resources, tools and events, ideally related to procurement of carbon-free energy.
