We are seeking an Energy Market Analyst or Senior Energy Market Analyst to join our team in Boulder, CO. This position will be a key member of Ascend Analytics’ market intelligence team, supporting market forecasting analytics and activities. The work of this team supports Ascend’s long-term planning and project finance support with electric utilities, developers, and financiers, playing a critical role in helping clean energy projects actually get built. The role will combine quantitative analysis of energy market dynamics, technical understanding of energy systems, and energy policy analysis to help guide strategic planning for a variety of electricity market participants and stakeholders. We’d like someone who brings a passion for the energy sector, an ability to see the big picture, and a desire to have an impact. A Senior Analyst role could be available for a candidate with additional training and experience.

Job Responsibilities 

• Perform quantitative analysis that combines technical considerations, economic factors, market rules, and regulatory/policy developments 
• Perform in-depth analysis of power market operations and relevant policies 
• Be able to work both independently and collaboratively 
• Assimilate complex information into readily understood reports and presentations 
• Understand, research, document, present, and justify market forecasts and their underlying assumptions 
• Build analytical tools using Excel and Python/R to assist in market forecasting and analytical activities 

Required Qualifications 

• Bachelor’s degree in a quantitative field, such as economics or engineering.  
• Familiarity with energy technology and policy, and basic microeconomic principles 
• Excellent quantitative analytical skills, including the use of Excel and coding in Python/R  
• Strong interpersonal skills, teamwork skills and work ethic 
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills 
• Ability to prioritize multiple assignments and problem-solve with minimum supervision 
• Excellent organizational skills 
• Demonstrated track record of being able to perform independent research and synthesize complex information 

Preferred Qualifications 

• An advanced degree with a focus on energy systems, economics, or engineering, or 2+ years experience in energy resource planning and wholesale electricity markets 
• Project management and/or consulting experience 
• Familiarity with fundamental energy modeling tools and concepts 

Compensation: $80,000 - $130,000                   

Negotiable based on qualifications and experience. Ascend highly values our employees and often pays above industry average.
