Job Description

OVERVIEW

We are currently seeking a Soil Technician Team Lead to join our Soil Carbon team responsible for supporting and driving our ambitious projects to quantify and sequester carbon in soil. The successful candidates will assist in collecting soil samples at several agricultural sites across Canada, from Vancouver Island to the Prairies Region. 

Reporting to the Senior Soil Scientist, this position will work closely with two Soil Technicians as well as scientists and engineers as part of our interdisciplinary Research & Development team.   

This role is a 4-month full-time contract, with an ideal start date in late August/early September and ends on December 31, 2021. 

YOUR MISSION

To help lead and support our work in soil carbon analysis by building a soil sample collection which is representative of a range of agricultural soils across Canada. 

ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Lead and organize logistical planning associated with soil sampling campaigns; to include travel, accommodation, and sample handling 
  • Assume critical responsibility for soil sampling at designated field sites according to a pre-defined protocol 
  • Ensure that all soil sampling is conducted in accordance with defined protocols and the work progresses in a timely manner 
  • Tackle any unplanned difficulties to ensure the overall campaign progresses and the goals are met 
  • Liaise with landowners prior to, during, and after sampling 
  • Organize the shipment of samples back to headquarters in Vancouver  
  • Undertake soil processing duties including drying and sieving of soil, together with some initial analyses 
  • Perform other related duties in keeping with the purpose and accountabilities of the job 

REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelors of Science degree, with proven soil science/field work component
  • Ability to lift up to 25kg
  • Hold a valid Class 5 Drivers License
  • Ability to travel for extended periods of time and work outside of normal working hours
  • Experience conducting field-based soil research, taking soil samples, making soil measurements, and processing samples prior to analysis
  • Experience with making field notes and collating field information
  • Ability to work as part of a small team, making key decisions and coordinating activities and using shared equipment
  • Ability to work remotely and thrive in less than ideal weather conditions
  • Familiarity using geospatial positioning equipment would be an asset

LOCATION

  • Based in Vancouver, BC with required travel up to 60% across Western Canada

Terramera will pay for all transportation costs and provide a work vehicle to perform work requiring travelling.
